2010 ties for warmest year, emissions to blame

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Last year tied for the warmest since data started in 1880, capping a decade of record high temperatures that shows mankind's greenhouse gas emissions are heating the planet, two U.S. agencies said.

Global surface temperatures in 2010 were 1.12 degrees Fahrenheit (0.62 Celsius) above the 20th century average, tying the record set in 2005, the National Climatic Data Center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said on Wednesday.

"These results show that the climate is continuing to show the influence of greenhouse gases. It's showing evidence of warming," David Easterling, the chief of the scientific services division at the NCDC, told reporters in a teleconference.

Many places, such as Russia and Pakistan, suffered from heat waves and floods that killed thousands, scorched crops and inundated countless farm acres. Those events, caused in part by a shifted jet stream in the atmosphere, helped lead to record global food prices and threaten to lead to food riots like those seen in 2008.

It's not possible to directly link global warming as the cause of one weather event. But the trend of rising temperatures since 2000 increases the possibility of extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts and floods, Easterling said. Every year since 2000 has ranked as one of the 15 warmest years on record, he said.

Last year was also the wettest on record and a warmer atmosphere holds more water, which in general can result in more floods, he said.

Gets a little inaccurate when you put the thermometers right next to the hot water heaters.

emissions to blame

What was to blame in 1880?

James Hansen, the director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said "if the warming trend continues, as is expected, if greenhouse gases continue to increase, the 2010 record will not stand for long." His office also released a report on Wednesday that said 2010 was tied for the warmest year on record with 2005.

Hansen is truly without a conscience.

And, needless to say, the data were "cooked", n'est ce pas?

This was one of the most moderate temperatured summers I can recall. Our air conditioning spike was the lowest we’ve had. We had some of the lowest electric bills this year we’ve had in ten years.

I wonder what others experienced.

It’s all my fault. I spent the entire year four wheeling off-road and shooting my black powder guns. On my off days I mowed the lawn with my ancient Briggs & Straton lawn mower that puts out clouds of exhaust.

Want to make a bet that 2011 will be THE warmest year ever? The worldwide temperatures through December ‘11 are already tabulated and ready to be printed out at the touch of a button.

I live in Portland and we almost did not have a summer. Very mild.

I also recall the Russians saying the IPCC cherry picked the numbers they used for the Russian areas data.

Not to mention the MET in the UK putting out a false winter forecast for a mild winter. All to set the stage for the global warming conference in Cancun. Now the UK is having all kinds of problems because they were not prepared for the coldest winter on record.

Gorebull warming is the biggest fraud ever perpetrated on the world population.

Thermometers next to an exhaust stack have a tendancy to record high temperatures!

So many assumptions, so many wrong conclusions.

Let’s look at this logically...
Warmest since 1880. Ok, how warm was it? 1.12 deg hotter than the average. WOW! that’s like the difference between 67 deg and 68 deg on my home thermostat. And that is the difference between the HOTTEST and the AVERAGE? But that would mean that the coldest would be about 1.12 deg below average, meaning that the difference I would see on my thermostat would be like 66 deg to 68 deg. WOW! Just WOW!

So, these 2+ degrees shows that the climate is being influenced by greenhouse gasses? How? It’s only two degrees. Over 130 YEARS.

Not only did Russia and Pakistan have heat waves and scorched crops (as if THAT had never happened before) but it was also the WETTEST on record... at the same time!

Sigh. We might as well face it, we’re DOOOOOOOOOOOOMED

Shoot, we had at least a week over 80 deg in Seattle.
