Gibbs likes idea of no sides at SOTU
Politico44 ^ | 01/13/11 | MATT NEGRIN

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs expressed tepid approval on Thursday for Sen. Mark Udall’s idea that the parties sit together, not separate, during President Obama’s State of the Union address on Jan. 25.

“I haven't had an opportunity to talk to some folks around here on that. It's an interesting idea,” Gibbs told reporters on Thursday. “Maybe not having a physical aisle separate us would be a good thing as we talk about the state of our union, and that's everybody. That's not one side or the other. That's everyone.”

They don’t want the strongest side to look unified to the plebs. This is all for propaganda and the 2012 election.

Isn’t liberalism extremely infectious??

I’d rather not have our new Tea Party Congress critters exposed—but if they want to sit wherever they want instead of in parties, no biggie. I suspect everyone would sit in parties *anyway*.

why is it that they only want to get along, be bi-partisan, come together, sing kumbaya, reach across the isle and have a beer when they know they are sliding downhill?

and why is it that repubs fall for it every time?

screw them, press on to victory! press the attack!

when you have your opponent on the ropes, and your pummeling the crap out of him, you don’t go back to your corner, you knock him out and end the fight.

but noooo, the libs want to call “uncle” every time they are on the ropes, and then they sucker punch you as you go back to your corner.

If the opposition is disguised, we’re going to deny them a clear and longstanding way to show their displeasure with the president’s agenda, and the U.S. Supreme Court is harangued from the podium by this president, then I think we should stop the speech altogether and return to Jefferson’s preference for simply delivering a written correspondence to Congress. It’s a partisan event - the president outlines his vision, his legislative agenda. He doesn’t speak in obstuse, apolitical terms about the nation or our unity, (as if we don’t all know anyway), it’s a pep rally; any president’s greatest political stage. Either respect Congress’ and the Judiciary’s equality, or simply report to the Congress as you’re required to do Mr. chief cxecutive. This isn’t a monarchy.

The republicans should just NOT attend. There is no requirement that the president present in person. The president can be refused entry since the House must invite him to address the joint session and can refuse him entry. IF the GOP had any nads they would disinvite him and he can deliver the SOTU in writing as has been done many times in the past.

It’s about time that we had a grown-up for president, who could go back to the original way of giving the SOTU, by sending a written document to congress. This would end the circus that began with Woodrow Wilson, and has turned into a lugubrious and insulting partisan display, full of fluff and nonsense.

Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution requires something along the lines of a SOTU, but there is no requirement for a speech.

Instead, a SOTU should be followed up with a similar document presented by each cabinet officer to the appropriate Senate and House committees, each outlining their portion of the executive branch, its functions, activities, projects, and projected needs.

It is downright offensive for the president, the executive, to proffer *his* agenda to congress. These “dead on arrival” budgets and other programs are a waste of time, and not his job. If he has such agenda items on his wish list, they should likewise be presented to the appropriate congressional committees.

This is the way the president submits cabinet, judicial and flag grade appointments to congress, so this is the way he should do other things as well. Congress works much more efficiently when it is not put on the spot.

Now I remember. This is an old communist trick, called "the diamond formation".

When they were in a minority in a gathering, they would sit in a diamond pattern, then anytime a communist leader would speak, they would all jump to their feet, wildly applauding, and creating the *illusion* that what Obama is saying is far more popular, from whatever angle observers would look at the assembled audience.

Now that the Reps have a clear majority in the House and have narrowed the advantage in the Senate, it is better for the Dems to have everyone sitting together to mask the true size of the Rep majority presence. And it could inhibit the Reps from showing their displeasure. The Reps would be fools to accept this.
