Agree to do abortions or you can't go to school here.
That's the message from Vanderbilt University's nursing residency program, where the school requires applicants to sign a pledge stating they'll participate in abortions.
The Christian legal group Alliance Defense Fund has filed a complaint with the federal Department of Health and Human Services in response stating the policy violates federal law.
The ADF reports that federal law states that any institution that receives federal grants cannot require students to do abortions in violation of their religious beliefs.
ADF spokesman Matt Bowman says it's clear the application misses the mark regarding the regulations.
"Vanderbilt is violating the law by requiring nursing residency applicants to promise to assist in abortions," Bowman explained.
"The fact that Vanderbilt receives federal funding violates the law by requiring their nursing candidates to assist in abortions," Bowman added.
Bowman says the Vanderbilt policy violates the law providing that any institution receiving federal grants cannot force, coerce or otherwise require an individual to assist in abortions.
"No entity which receives, after September 29, 1979, any grant, contract, loan, loan guarantee, or interest subsidy under the Public Health Service Act [42 U.S.C. 201 et seq.], the Community Mental Health Centers Act [42 U.S.C. 2689 et seq.], or the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act of 2000 [42 U.S.C. 15001 et seq.] may deny admission or otherwise discriminate against any applicant (including applicants for internships and residencies) for training or study because of the applicant's reluctance, or willingness, to counsel, suggest, recommend, assist, or in any way participate in the performance of abortions or sterilizations contrary to or consistent with the applicant's religious beliefs or moral convictions," the law stated.

Is there anything that can be done about this?
It’s insane that people who want to help the suffering are required to become assistant killers. May God bless and guide them.
Absolutely despicable.
Vanderbilt was once a great university and hospital. But this sick pledge is absolutely depraved.
The nurses can tell the truth about abortion to the women getting the abortion. The doctors will excuse them immediately.
Thanks for posting.
This is outrageous. Why would anyone go to nursing school there?
Good grief. I’ve always thought of Vanderbilt as relatively conservative compared to most universities these days. Somebody needs to fire whoever came up with this program.
There is going to be a special place in hell for these miserable creatures that want to not only kill unborn children but spread the spiritual cancer to others. I had an "opportunity" as an intern to assist in a 2nd trimester abortion of a child with hydrocephalus and "declined". I was not comfortable with the procedure they were going to use and their reasoning behind this treatment modality. I guess I wasn't sophisticated enough to perform as an assistant abortionist.
Gruesome work and it's as difficult on the staff as with the patient. A "no win" scenario if there ever was one.
I believe Vanderbilt backed off this requirement not too long ago due to pressure from outside Pro-Life groups.
Vanderbilt University, thanks Iam1ru1-2.
Indeed they did.
0 News: Science and Medicine Vanderbilt changes application in response to alleged abortion law violation By Kyle Blaine Published Jan. 13, 2011. 287 views Alliance Defense Fund Vanderbilt University has changed language in its nursing residency application after two complaints were filed with the Department of Health and Human Services alleged Vanderbilt was in violation of federal abortion law. The school sent out an update to its applicants Wednesday notifying them of the changes made to the application and clarifying the policy itself. While Vanderbilt expects all health care providers, including nurses who participate in the Nurse Residency Programs Womens Health Track, to provide compassionate care to all patients, the statement reads, no health care provider is required to participate in a procedure terminating a pregnancy if such participation would be contrary to an individuals religious beliefs or moral convictions.

Well, I can ping the list. It seems that all but a tiny handful of institutions of higher learning are stuff and saturated with the vilest of leftists. Even nursing schools! What about the Rutherford Institute? I think that's what it's called, they do pro bono work for violations of religious freedom, or used to.
This is illegal!
They need to have their butts sued!
NOW!
Vanderbilt Abandons Policy Forcing Nursing Students to Do Abortions
this is illegal. You can indeed be pressured into helping with abortions if you can’t prove you are religious, but you can get away with it if you belong to a religion that opposes it.
This is “religious discrimination”.
So although I was “failed” for not doing so, and I was allowed to pass on appeal, but my best friend, a Hindu, could not because some Hindu sects allow abortion.
However, nurses may have to do precare and post care for abortion patients if there are no other nurses available and the hospital cannot find another nurse in an emergency.
Finally, the students can try what some of our Muslim residents did: when threatened they’d lose their residency (and US visa) they got together and said: We are Muslims. we don’t do abortions. Fire one of us, and we all will quit.
ping!
