Fifty years ago next week, Richard Nixon stood uncomfortably on the Capitol's inaugural platform and watched his rival John F. Kennedy being sworn in as president. "We won" the election, Nixon fumed, "but they stole it from us."
Indeed, the dirty tricks that helped defeat Nixon were more devious than merely the ballot-stuffing of political lore. In one of the least-known chapters of 20th-century political history, Kennedy operatives secretly paid off an informant and set in motion a Watergate-like burglary that sabotaged Nixon's campaign on the eve of the election.

Yes. When he was busy making his fortune smuggling whiskey from Canada, Joseph Kennedy had connections with the Chicago Mafia.
Mayor Daley stole Illinois for JFK, and LBJ stole Texas, in return for the V.P. job.
Nixon actually won.
And although he seems to have endeared himself to some conservatives, JFK was actually a lousy, incompetent President.
Bay of Pigs, badly handled Vietnam War, assassination of Diem, and the list goes on.
Think about it. Just what did Joe end up with? Not only had he lost his oldest son in the war, his next two sons were murdered as a result of old Joe’s push to put a Kennedy in the White House. Then his youngest son becomes a drunkard and causes the death of a young woman. Joe himself ended up having a massive stroke around the time that JFK was elected. He spent the rest of his life in a wheel chair.
The moral of the story is that The Lord acts in mysterious ways. What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but suffers the loss of his immortal soul?

Kennedy and co. also pulled real dirty tricks against Humphrey in the primaries by spreading anti Catholic literature and then blaming Humphrey’s campaign. This way they picked up a sympathy vote. Pretty low.
Comments from readers at the story defend Kennedy and castigate Nixon while admitting that both side committed "dirty tricks" (surprise, surprise - WaPo). Some of the defenders even make up, or believe, certain lies about Nixon, but always defend pretty-boy Kennedy.
Yes. It’s ironic that so many Catholics voted for Kennedy, because he would be the first Catholic President, a groundbreaking precedent after many years of anti-Catholic discrimination.
And then Kennedy turned around in office and never did a thing that could have been said to have been motivated by his Catholic upbringing or by orthodox Catholic values.
Kind of like his brother Teddy. Catholic in Name Only.
