P.J. O'Rourke: 'We are seeing the sad end of liberalism'
American Thinker ^ | January 17, 2011 | Rick Moran

Posted on 01/17/2011 9:01:59 AM PST by Hotlanta Mike

In a mostly serious, spot on analysis of New York Times reporting on the Tucson shootings, P.J. O'Rourke wonders if the kind of liberalism promoted by the Times and others hasn't outlived its usefulness in our political debates.

Writing in The Weekly Standard, O'Rourke excoriates several Times writers for their obvious biases before getting to the meat of his critique:

A reaction so disproportionate and immaterial to a news story by a news organization is indicative of trouble in the body politic-trouble almost as severe as that which the Times claims the Giffords shooting indicates. I worry that in the tremors and hysteria of the Times we're seeing the sad end of liberalism.

CBS poll: 57% of Americans reject ‘Palin did it’ media spin on Arizona massacre

http://www.examiner.com/post-partisan-in-national/cbs-poll-57-of-americans-reject-palin-did-it-media-spin-on-arizona-massacre#ixzz1BJTgcMZi

What troubles me is — it is STILL just 57%, too low for my comfort. That tells us that there’s still a HUGE MASS of people — millions of them -— who believe in the liberal Media spin.

PJ is a great conservative humorist with insight into the crazy Left ( he was editor of National Lampoon at it’s zenith) , and could be VERY instrumental in tea party ascendency. I, for one, would like to see consistent, timely PJOR articles.

I was once a “liberal,” when liberalism meant something RADICALLY different.

Like “progressive” and “democrat,” these terms were usurped by dedicated Marxist/socialist operatives who have seized the democrat party in a slow motion coup lasting 50 years. The media, the federal bureaucracy, and academia were also 80%-90% captured by these same forces.

But liberalism, as personified by the New York Times, became a dotty old aunt sometime during the Johnson administration. She's provincial, eccentric, and holds dull, peculiar views about the world. Still, she has our fond regard, and we visit her regularly in her nursing home otherwise known as Arts and Leisure and the Book Review. Or we did until Sunday, January 9, when she began spouting obscenities and exposing herself.
She may have Alzheimer's but her physical health is still strong.

Liberalism is dead? Don’t believe it for a second. Liberalism is like Michael Myers in the “Halloween” series. Every time you think you killed it, it rises up again to surprise you. Never turn your back on the “corpse”.

I will only believe Liberalism is dead when its last practitioners flee the country for Sweden ahead of the Lynch Mob.

"I was once a “liberal,” when liberalism meant something RADICALLY different."

Jefferson, Madison, Locke, Smith, Rosseau and Votaire were all considered liberals also. They were concerned with individual liberties (the true meaning of liberalism). The only time the role of government came up with these great philosophical thinkers was for the government to protect the people's individual liberties. Like you, I consider myself a liberal. In the classical sense of liberalism that these great thinkers espoused...

Amen. I remember back in 1994 when the GOP finally retook the House and conservatism looked like it was off and running.
Shortly thereafter, Rush made the comment that we should put a few Lib professors into museums, just in case we wanted to remind ourselves what they looked like.
One of the few times Rush was wrong.

Liberals wake up in a new world every morning. They have the same long-term memory as a cockroach.

It will usually destroy the country completely before anything dissuades its adherents.

The ruling class will hold on until they are alone in a shattered shell of a country, then they just go elsewhere.

Would be interesting to know how many have foreign addresses available when needed..

Another thing that irks me: The theft of the word “Progressive” by the Marxists/socialist thugs who now run the media, academia and the democrat party,

“Progressive” once meant the conservationist, anti-monopolist, free-market solution oriented REPUBLICANS like Teddy Roosevelt!

Biggest unpunished felony in American History!

Keep in mind that 33% of the 43% who believe the shooting is related somehow to Palin are hard-core liberals who believe everything the media says as some form of gospel and your left with about 10% of the population. That’s about the percentage of Americans who are booger-eating and mouthbreathing morons.

There will always be somebody in line to take your money and then proceed to use it against your interests.

Anyone notice how the word ‘Tort’ hasn’t come within 4000 miles of the healtcare debate?

As for the words ‘Tort’ and ‘Reform’, I imagine that if those two words came together in any MSM editorial context, their would be an explosion on the order of matter and anti-matter coming together in concentrations measured in pounds.

“sad end”
I can’t say that I’ve ever seen a happy side to liberalism.
It is either manic vituperation from the Olbermann/Mahers or nonsense delivered with a straight face from the Rathers/Courics and screwball wing of the Democratic party.

The best example might be Katrina VandenHoovel sp? (Latrina Vanden Hooters? Vampirella Pussinboots?) of The Nation: her TV facial expression always suggests extreme suffering from painful flatulence.

My all-time favorite:

"At the core of liberalism is the spoiled child —
miserable, as all spoiled children are, unsatisfied,
demanding, ill-disciplined, despotic and useless.
Liberalism is a philosophy of sniveling brats."

Love this passage:

"Editorialized the Times: “It is legitimate to hold Republicans and particularly their most virulent supporters in the media responsible for the gale of anger that has produced the vast majority of these threats.” Interesting how a few small changes would make that sentence appall the Times as much as the Times appalls me: “It is legitimate to hold Muslims and particularly their most virulent supporters in the media responsible for the gale of anger that has produced 9/11.”"

Sad? Not really! I’m ecstatic about it.

Be careful what you wish for. We live in a bi-polar universe. Up-down, left-right, hot-cold, sweet-sour ... etc.

If "liberalism" disappears, something will take its place in opposition to normalcy. It may be better to allow a crippled, ineffectual shadow of its once-raging and destructive self to continue to exist. Schumer chained in place in Times Square ... so to speak ... snarling and spitting at passers-by. Parents passing with their children, warning them, "Watch out, son, don't get too close. The chuck can still hurt you."
