Some wag has said that a gaffe is any moment in which a politician accidentally tells the truth. Thats probably the case today as David Cameron tells a BBC radio audience that he is going to shake-up the National Health Service (NHS):
The remarks came during an interview on BBC Radio 4′s Today programme as he attempted to promote his flagship policy.
I dont think we should put up with a second rate with coming second best, he said, quickly correcting himself. We should aim to be the best.
This is a touchy subject in Britain because the NHS has regularly been accused of being second-rate by the press. Last year I put up a website and collected dozens of these stories in an attempt to warn Americans what we had to look forward to under national care. Sample story:

But everone is equal in their misery and lack of treatment so that makes it OK. That’s why we just signed on for it too.
I wish our UK health system were merely second rate. That would be bliss.
Serious mistake on his part.
He meant to say “fourth rate.”
