Former Swiss banker Rudolf Elmer on Monday gave WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange data on about 2,000 clients that he contends may have evaded taxes, published reports said.
At a press conference in London, Elmer told reporters about 40 politicians and pillars of society were among the individuals he gave Assange information on, the reports said.
Elmer told The Observer newspaper during the weekend that the individuals named in the data include business people, politicians, people who have made their living in the arts and multinational conglomerates from both sides of the Atlantic.
Elmer once headed the Cayman Islands office of Swiss bank Julius Baer /quotes/comstock/22a!baer (CH:BAER 41.84, -1.47, -3.39%) . He faces trial in Switzerland on Wednesday on charges of violating the countrys banking secrecy rules.
Assange said WikiLeaks would verify and release the information as soon as during the next two weeks.

Oh, no, what did Charlie Sheen do now?
If there are big Crats on the list he will be released.
I can name three right off the top of my head: Tim Geithner, Charlie Rangel and Al Sharpton.
That induced a hearty chuckle out of me...
He faces trial in Switzerland on Wednesday on charges of violating the countrys banking secrecy rules.
That may be the least of his worries. If the names include someone named Putin, he may have polonium poisoning in his future...
This is hilarious. These politicians arrogate power and authority over the plebes and don’t follow the rules they claim everyone must follow.
Expose them, especially if it brings down the income tax.
The income tax is slavery.
Didn’t we just watch a crime being committed as stolen information was being transferred - I don’t think this bodes well for anyone.
Wonder if he’ll include Soros.
Society doesn’t have pillars any more - that’s why it is collapsing.
Unfortunately, as you imply, we are no longer supposed to value character. Power and money are what count. Character is for suckers. And we wonder why we're in a handbasket, and where we might be off to?
I am sure that there are a lot of Dems with Swiss accounts. If they aren’t on the list, then it’s a fraud.
I suspect that a generous donation to Wikileaks will get your name removed from the list.
Wiki’s funders will take the Crats off the list—and it will be a tally of misbehaving conservatives.
Personally, anyone who evades taxes is a near-hero in my book. Governments the world over are rapacious and often give very little in return for what the force the people to pay.
That’s what I liked about a lot of the older movies - it was about character. IWL was one of the best, but Stewart had a few others in ‘Harvey’ and ‘Mr. Smith goes to Washington’. Heck, even ‘Casablanca’ was about doing the right thing.
We just had a big blowup at work about almost this exact thing - what’s right vs how we can get around something to meet a made up date. Course the fella standing for what’s right will most likely be the one to pay the piper.
my thoughts exactly.
that is how I expect it to all play out.
Fortunately, the Limits of Adam come into play at both ends.
no ... he’ll be dead ...
