Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels may not be the only Hoosier seeking the Republican nomination for president in 2012. The rumors started swirling over the weekend that Rep. Mike Pence could be throwing his hat in the ring as well.
Conservative leaders are certainly beating the drum for a Pence run. This week, Mr. Pence will receive a letter of support for a presidential bid from, among others, Dick Armey, a former Republican House majority leader; Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center; and Morton Blackwell, president of the Leadership Institute.
There is also a petition circulating on the Internet to draft Mr. Pence for president. It is being spearheaded by former Rep. Jim Ryan and former Reagan official Ralph Benko, who has close ties to the conservative blogging community and the tea party movement. We're also told that a coalition of conservative state legislators in South Carolina is urging Mr. Pence to run and promising to do all it can to carry the early primary state for the congressman. Mr. Pence also enjoys the support of two former GOP congressmen from IndianaDavid McIntosh and Chris Chocola, who now runs the Club for Growth. "Mike has a Reagan quality to him that is lacking in many of the other first tier Republican candidates," said Mr. McIntosh.
Mr. Pence won the straw poll at a gathering of more than 1,000 social conservatives in Washington, D.C., over the summerbesting Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, and presumptive front-runner Mitt Romney. One concern is what Sarah Palin's intentions are, since she would have a huge funding base if she runs. But the pro-Pence movement fears that she is highly polarizing and someone who would have a difficult time beating President Obama in the general election.

The latest hope of the ‘Stop Sarah’ crowd.
That buzz is between your ears.
“stop sarah’, my a**. How about a draft a Reaganite. Which Palin most definitely is not. Peddle your Palin coronation to someone else.
No, a large number of conservatives will NOT be great.
I want to have a choice of conservatives who I want to vote for instead of one like last year.....Huckster.....Yuk! Sorry but your nonsense does not cut it for me. Remember that we at the end of the primary season only have a small choice. At least with 10 or more to chose from we can get a decent pick. Don’t tell me you are from Iowa and get all the bundles of love. Well most of us are not and we want good choices.

“the buzz is growing louder each day.”
Then I suggest you reduce your meds.
You must be right, we always nominate a strong rock ribbed conservative...boy those establishment Republicans are DUMB!!
Trying to foist Dole, McCain and Romney on us...
It’s great we can choose from Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo and Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee and Alan Keyes and Herman Cain and Mike Pence and on and on and on...we conservatives just love these guys and our vote is a purity test!
This isn’t about nominating a potential president, it’s about seeing if we’re smart enough to discern who the most conservative candidate is. I think pissant is winning...the country, not so much.
Just today I heard a local radio talk show host say he will be having Pence on his show. BTW, I’m in Iowa which makes me think it’s a possibility.
If the rumors from last week are true he just might run for president.
Last week I heard Daniels was NOT going to run and instead would be backing Haley Barbour, and if Daniels didn’t run, Pence probably would.
I guess they think two guys from Indiana might be a bit much.
I think if Sarah announces the field is going to shrink very fast. There are over a dozen considering it, but they are all waiting to see what the girl does.
Such men of conviction!
>> I just think it’s unhealthy for conservatives to be fixating on her <<
Oh heavens! Don’t tell me! Are you suggesting there’s some kinda PPDS (Pro-Palin Derangement Syndrome) hereabouts?
My local retreads, Rep.Dan Burton and Sen. Dan Coats are back in DC, thanks to 4-5 other very good candidates splitting the Primary tickets. I don't believe either one came close to 50% of the total vote.
Not necessarily, but I DO think it's a bit stultifying to take a "Sarah or nobody" sort of attitude, especially this early in the game. There are plenty of fine conservatives out there besides here - a lot of them MORE conservative than she is. I'm open to entertaining them as possibilities for 2012.

Not to point fingers, but Palin isn't exactly a rose on this issue, either...
“Nominating anyone other than Sarah Palin is akin to supporting the status quo. I like Pence but he would not be effective as president.”
I hate personal attacks,so please forgive me, but this is by far the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. Can you name me one position of Sarah Palin’s that is actually conservative? more specifically, can you name one position of Sarah Palin’s that is to the right of the typical GOP talking points?
Touche
Any hope of King still running? I actually like King more than Pence. He’s one of the few more conservative than Pence and subscribes to the Hunter philosophy more closely.
Pence also has come around and decided NO AMNESTY of any kind is warranted.
You are correct, sir. She still supports amnesty.
I’ll try and explain my statement to you in a way you might better understand. What I mean by “the status quo” is the inside-the-beltway elites. As good a conservative as Pence is, he is also tainted by serving in that cesspool. I’ve come to realize that those good ol’ boys are more interested in preserving their power than reforming the way government works. The place is so damned corrupt that an outside leader is needed to begin the arduous task of cleaning up the town.
Sarah Palin has a proven track record of rooting out corruption. She also went through the budgets of Alaska as governor and Wasilla as mayor, line by line, trimming unnecessary spending as much as possible. She adamantly supports energy exploration, a strong defense, support for Israel, cutting spending and taxes and reducing regulations on business. She has also taken everything the left has thrown at her while, at the same time, getting very little support from elected Republicans, including Pence. As to the elected Republicans not publicly supporting her, my question is why? Lack of courage? Afraid of the media? Or is it for the same reasons as the left, that they feel she is a threat to their base of power?
Now, as for Pence, he is a great conservative congressman, imo. If he truly wants to make a difference, he would stay in the congress and fight for needed reforms. Or he could, as some want him to do, run for governor of Indiana. He needs to prove he has administrative skills before he is ready for the presidency. Just being a conservative and holding conservative views isn’t enough.
BTW, typical GOP talking points have proven to be just that, merely talking points. If it weren’t for the tea party movement, there wouldn’t be anything accomplished and I need to yet see if the current members of congress have learned the lessons of the last election. The days of just saying what people want to hear to be elected and then discarded are over. Either produce or you’re fired!
decent answer but it does not apply to Pence. Pence made his name opposing the leadership of his party and is actually loathed by the party insiders. He was actually blamed for losing the house in 06 because he told the truth about the GOp... he then ran for leader and received all of 25 votes...basically Pence spent 4 years running down (in public) the leadership (and president) of his own party(he obviously has toned it down since 08 but he did not sell out on TARP and other things)...put in another way...staus quo would be someone Ted Stevens could have gotten along with...pence certainly is not that (for now)
