Report: Lieberman to announce retirement tomorrow

Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman — deeply unpopular with voters in his home state — is unlikely to seek reelection, a knowledgeable source tells POLITICO ahead of the senator’s announcement on Wednesday…

“After many thoughtful conversations with family and friends over the last several months, Sen. Lieberman made a decision about his future over the holidays which he plans to announce on Wednesday,” said Erika Masonhall, a Lieberman spokeswoman who declined to comment further… Snip~

Lieberman’s announcement comes on the heels of Tuesday’s declaration by Susan Bysiewicz, the former Connecticut secretary of state, that she plans to enter the 2012 Democratic primary field for Lieberman’s Senate seat. Rep. Chris Murphy also has expressed interest in the Democratic primary…

A Public Policy Polling survey conducted in late October put Lieberman’s approval rating among Connecticut voters at 33 percent.

I’m not too surprised by this, (if true), actually.

IMHO, Lieberman used up the last of his political rabbits-in-the-hat when he went indy to beat Ned Lamont. I like Lieberman personally, but politically the guy is Arlen Specter with a nicer demeanor. The guy has flip-flopped his whole career, and I think people in Ct. are tired of it. He likely would have lost the next election, regardless of where we are in 2012 nationally.

So, instead of ending on a defeat, Lieberman goes out on top by retiring. And in the process, he clears the path for the next Dick Blumenthal.

LieBerman was supposedly a "pro-life" democrat for years, until Algore picked him as VP running mate in 2000.

LOL. Algore was "pro-life" until he started running for President in 1987. His views "evolved". There are no pro-life democrats.

Joe Lieberman is a dyed-in-the-wool liberal that used to be popular in Connecticut but lost favor with the leftist die-hards when he dared to support the Iraq war and 'the surge'. In 2006 the state Democrat party had a snit and refused to nominate Lieberman so he ran as an Independent and because of his war stance, received many Republican votes, including mine. As a Connecticut resident, I can state that it was a relief to vote for a candidate that actually had a chance to win, for a change, even if I know Lieberman was no conservative. His challenger, Ned Lamont was practically a Commie - and an rich, arrogant Commie, at that, so I really wanted him to lose. He did, big-time. Lieberman ended up being a mostly guaranteed vote for the Democrats, which surprised no one. After all, he 'represents' a 'blue' state with a distinct Democrat voter registration advantage and piles of public service union money on tap for the Democrat's next election.

Joe Lieberman will be 70 by the time he finishes his fourth term as U.S. Senator from Connecticut in 2012. I'm sure his financial nest is nicely feathered and he has a very nice resume to look back on. It's simply time for Joe to call it a career - and he is. For the few political conservatives in Connecticut, his retirement poses no great loss or great relief. There may even be a ghost of a chance Connecticut voters will wake up and put a Republican in that senate seat, but I doubt it. Connecticut has been solidly Democrat for 50 years - but then, who knows? Meanwhile, we'll look forward to a viable Republican running for Lieberman's senate seat so we can vote without holding our nose, again.
