House Dem compares GOP health care case to Nazi propaganda

In the days following Tucson, lawmakers and the press monitored each modicum of political speech to see if a moment of intemperate rhetoric would signal a break in a “new era of civility” ushered in by the tragic shooting.

Looks like: Yup.

In a little-noticed floor speech last night (flagged today by ABC News), Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee invoked Nazis, the Holocaust, Germany’s infamous Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels, and – yes – blood libel in describing how Republicans have characterized the health care law as a “government takeover.”

“They say it's a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels," Cohen said. "You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That's the same kind of thing, blood libel. That's the same kind of thing.”

That’s okay, we can compare the ‘Rats health care law to Nazi medical care.

(And if they really want to discuss Nazi propaganda, suddenly Woodrow Wilson’s Committee on Public Information, the model for Goebbels efforts, comes to mind. . . and Wilson was a member of which party? . . .)

Say What? Democrat Compares Republicans to Nazis
http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2011/01/abc-news-jonathan-karl-reports-the-newfound-civility-didnt-last-long-political-rhetoric-in-congress-doesnt-get-much.html

ABC News Jonathan Karl reports: The newfound civility didn’t last long. Political rhetoric in Congress doesn’t get much nastier than the words of one House Democrat during the debate on repealing the health care law.

In an extraordinary outburst on the House floor, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) invoked the Holocaust to attack Republicans on health care and compared rhetoric on the issue to the work of infamous Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

“They say it’s a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels,” Cohen said. “You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That’s the same kind of thing. And Congressman Cohen didn’t stop there.

“The Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it—believed it and you have the Holocaust. We heard on this floor, government takeover of health care. Politifact said the biggest lie of 2010 was a government takeover of health care because there is no government takeover,” Cohen said.
Cohen made his comments late last night, but they have attracted no attention because his speech was made to a virtually empty House chamber with no reporters around to watch.

As soon as I heard that, I called my GOP rep and voiced my opinion of the joint seating idea for the SOU:

1. It is a dem trap
2. It is meant to diminish the GOP majority
3. It is tantamount to agreeing the Tucson shooting was politically motivated.
4. I want to see (.)bama called out from the audiance whenever he utters another lie, ala Joe Wilson did.

Frankly, the message taker did not seem to interested in my comments. Vote them all out next time.

A little background: Inner city says it all. His supporters are, no doubt, all on the dole.

Stephen Ira "Steve" Cohen (born May 24, 1949) is the U.S. Representative for Tennessee's 9th congressional district, serving since 2007. He is a member of the Democratic Party. He previously served as a Tennessee State Senator for 24 years. Tennessee's 9th district includes almost three-fourths of Memphis. Cohen is the only non-black representing a black majority district in Congress.[1] Cohen contracted polio when he was five, and the disease caused him to shift his attention from sports to politics at an early age.[4] When Cohen was eleven, John F. Kennedy made a campaign stop in Memphis, and Cohen took a picture of Kennedy sitting on a convertible. Cohen describes Kennedy as his political hero;

This congresssman, Steve Cohen of Tennessee, is doing what the left always does when they’re cornered; spew invective and compare their opposition to Hitler, Nazis and the Holocaust, buzz words that have, sadly, become trite from overuse. Those on the political left who cannot truthfully defend ObamaCare, wistfully hope that if they name-call and link the opposition to Nazi’s, that opposition - in this case, not just congressional Republicans but over half of America - will slink away, embarrassed and rightfully scorned. Well, that ploy may have worked 20 or 30 years ago but no more, at least not when ObamaCare is the issue. Americans hate it and see it for what it really is. A hideously expensive, massive intrusion into the doctor-patient relationship and a vehicle that will be used to control people when it’s provisions have forced private health insurance companies out of the market and ObamaCare remains the only souce of health care insurance. Gee, I dunno, I think that would be, in effect, a government takeover, congressman Cohen.

I admit my error it’s 24 years, but I was right he’s never held a real job.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Cohen

Stephen Ira “Stevo” Cohen (born May 24, 1949) is the U.S. Representative for Tennessee’s 9th congressional district, serving since 2007. He is a member of the Democratic Party. He previously served as a Tennessee State Senator for 24 years.

Tennessee’s 9th district includes almost three-fourths of Memphis. Cohen is Tennessee’s first Jewish congressman. Cohen is the only non-black representing a black majority district in Congress.[1]

While serving for three years as Legal Advisor for the Memphis Police Department, Cohen rose to political prominence when he was elected to the Tennessee Constitutional Convention of 1977 at the age of 27. The Convention elected him its vice president.[6] Cohen was then elected to serve as a commissioner on the Shelby County Commission, an office he held from 1978 to 1980.[2] During his time at the Commission, Cohen was instrumental in the creation of The Med, a community-funded regional hospital.[6] In 1980, Cohen served as an interim Shelby County General Sessions Court judge.[2] He has also served as a delegate to the 1980, 1992, and 2004 Democratic National Conventions.[2]
