Michigan Democratic Rep. John Dingell, the longest serving member of the House, said Thursday that he'll seek another term next year.
"It's the greatest job in the world," Dingell told the Detroit News. "I can help people and ... make things better, and I represent some of the finest people on earth. The people in southeast Michigan are nothing short of wonderful."
Dingell, 84, was first elected to the House in 1955 in a special election after his father, who previously held the seat, passed away. In February of 2009, he became the longest-ever serving member of the House. In his next term, he'll surpass former West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd (D) as the longest serving member of Congress in history.
Dingell, who has previously served as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, also commented on the possibility that his district composition could change significantly since Republicans have complete control of the redistricting process in Michigan.

Gee, if his opponent buries him, would that make him a DINGELL BURY?
I guess Dingell didn’t get the memo that the donkeys got their asses kicked in November and it ain’t lookin’ all that much better for 2012!
Mandatory retirement at 75, at least.
July 8, 1926 (age 84)
What is wrong with these old men that they can’t let go?
He is the Crat Partys Dingleberry.
I have a fil like this...still thinks he needs to be the loudest and still trying to command the floor.....mostly we just ignore...
When I’m 84 I want to be sitting in a small cabin dispensing wisdom to my grandchildren and young preachers.
These old dudes hanging out in Congress are like high school grads who keep hanging out in the school for the next few years. Someone ought to take them by the elbow and walk them out to the car.
I hope Dr. Steele runs against him again. I’m sure this time he’ll get support from the RNC. He nearly beat Dingell last time and would have, had he had more cash.
Filled in with what must be going through his mind, as he answered that question.
He’s 84 and looks and acts about 104.
They could run any carrot with a dingell’ing
face carved into it and it’s constituents would
still vote for it. Pavlov’s dog conditioning.
Let’s see get paid $175k a year, free healthcare, free junkets and you don’t even have to read the bills your voting on. Sounds like the perfect retirement to me. Hey Digleberry, no kidding you have the greatest job in the world. Now get the hell out of there and make room for somebody not in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s.
It seems like the only way he’ll leave is when he joins his voters in Michigan Memorial Park. I’m sure my family there voted for him in November.
This is great news for the people of MI who have suffered so much in the national economic slump. They have their Dingell to fight for them!!! And morever they really believe that.
I don’t know about that, after all you are talking about the blockheads in MI, many of whom many vote for Myth Romney too.
“It’s the greatest job in the world,”
No work involved, he doesn’t even have to read what he votes on, He has Secretary’s and interns, gets the best perks in the world. Free postage to mail out his propaganda, why: He doesnt even have to think.
Everything bought and paid for by the taxpayer.
He doesn’t have to worry about re-election either ,the people who vote for him don’t have to think any more than he does. They are democrats and just vote party line.Same thing he does.
It appears to me that his first priority should be to live until 2012 than decide what he will do.
“I can help people and ... make things better
Someone should look at the progression of southeast Michigan since he has been in office. I am quite sure things have gone in the crapper over that period. Dingell, and the Democrat Party should be held responsible!!
Lets remember that John Dingell resigned his position on the NRA board of directors so that he could vote FOR Bill Clinton’s assault rifle ban and magazine ban.
If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.
“It’s the greatest job in the world,”
It sure is, especially when the press and the constituants don’t hold you accountable.
While term limits sounds like a good idea on its face, the actual resulting government is seen in Michigan. You just end up with a rotation of the same folks from one public office to another, at all levels of the state. In addition, you get a lot of votes for terrible legislation when they know they are being termed out and it won’t matter.
I’d rather have a knowledgable electorate that votes smartly.
I sincerely hope that Dr Steele will consider running again as a Republican. And, begin campaigning in earnest before Labor Day.
I also hope that the MSM will fairly cover any debates these two may have. Dr Steele was far and away the better candidate in the debate I attended.
It takes a long time to do the necessary administrative steps that have to be taken to put the legislation together to control the people.
Congressman John Dingell (D-MI), on passing Obamacare
Debbie Dingell is vice chairwoman of the General Motors Foundation, which handles the automakers community affairs work, and a senior executive at the company. She is also a member of the board of governors for Wayne State University.
His son Christopher was a state Senator and is now currently a Third Circuit Court Judge hailing from the same district.
This family has literally made a multi-generational career and fortune off Michigan taxpayers...........
Dingell, who has previously served as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, also commented on the possibility that his district composition could change significantly since Republicans have complete control of the redistricting process in Michigan. Thanks markomalley.
Arrogance or senility?
He wants to nip any retirement rumors in the bud.
I say run baby run. Let the American people hear over and over his words about the Health Care bill and WHO really wrote it.
Not to worry, the Dummies will tell him to “Sit Down And Shut Up” before this joke goes to far.
If someone from Ann Arbor City like Rebekah Warren or Liz Brater runs and wins, we'll be wishing for Dingell. Even redistricting would be tough since Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti are 70% dimocrap and combine for 160,000 people. The area around Metro Airport is bigtime dimocrap as well.
Amendment: Term limits and then NO MORE POLITICAL OFFICES OR APPOINTMENTS.
As he stated in a radio interview about Obamacare — It takes a long time to control the people.-— Seems he is still working on it, only now he is calling it help people.
Actually...my money's on it being a little of both. What an awful combination.
Yes he wants to scare off any potential challengers. His age and any major changes to the district leave him vulnerable.
I have to think that Lynn Rivers prays daily for his death.
