Will Obama mention gun control in his State of the Union?

Now that Dick Cheney has opened the door to tighter gun restrictions, will President Barack Obama do the same?

That politically dicey question is playing out behind the scenes in the run-up to next week’s State of the Union. In the aftermath of the Tucson shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and federal Judge John Roll, gun control groups and some Democratic members of Congress are pushing to get the president to directly address the issue of gun violence in his speech to Congress next Tuesday, according to gun control advocates and congressional aides, who asked for anonymity.

Some Democratic party donors are also being urged to weigh in as part of a quiet lobbying effort to prod the president to finally speak out on an issue that he has studiously avoided since taking office, the advocates say.

“There’s a major push to get [Obama] to say something on this,” said Chad Ramsey, legislative director of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a leading gun control group. “We’ve been told he will say something, but we’re not sure how strong it will be.”

That perhaps we need a ban on high cap magazines. VERY disappointing.

A disappointment is only cause by something happening that one does not expect. Since Bush daddy banned semi-auto imports and the importation of vast quantities of ammo by xo, and Shrub stated that he would sign any gun control legislation that made it to his desk, how can this be a disappointment?

Will Mister Obama mention gun control in the SOTU?

I would bet yes, gun confiscation is a key element of the left; and, it's a chance to tar the Tea Party for something in which they had no part. His minders will, I suspect, put "common sense" gun control legislation in the speech ("common sense" being a liar's gimmick to fool folks into thinking that they would agree with the rules, that the rules would be unobstrusive, and that we somehow needed them all along.)

Probably something similar to ... " the tragic events in Tuscon remind us that there is still a need for common sense gun regulations to keep our population safe from those who can't control their hate and who would settle political discussions with violence."

.

By all means, Dick, let's infringe the freedom of law-abiding citizens based upon a knee-jerk reaction to the deeds of mentally-deranged subhumans.

And since that works so well with guns, let's try it with scissors since that abortion doctor did such horrible things with them.

As an aside, since we now have a Republican governor, Lt. Governor, House, Senate, One Federal Senator and I believe the majority of Federal Congressmen, it’s kind of hard to keep your moniker.... : )

Possibly.

But if he does mention it, his mind-numbingly dull statements will be vague enough, mealy-mouthed enough and flip-floppingly unintelligible enough that he will later, with a straight face, claim that he either spoke out FOR additional gun laws or AGAINST them, depending upon the way the political winds blow in the next year.

Expect Obama to highlight Rep. Giffords in his speech as an inspiration to the nation, but without explicit reference to gun control. When she recovers and returns to Congress, Gabby will introduce a gun control bill named for the 9-year-old girl who was killed. It has no doubt already been drafted by White House staffers and Pelosi/Reid. Pressure will be intense on Republicans not to block the bill lest they be seen as “trying to assassinate Gabby all over again.”

In 2012, Joe Biden will be eased off the ticket and made Secretary of State (Hillary Clinton will get the next open Supreme Court seat as consolation prize). Obama will then name Gabby Giffords as his VP running mate. Already canonized by the press, she will help Obama sweep to his second term. Mark my words, they have no shame and they will do this.

Right now, for Rep. Giffords, the NUMBER ONE PRIORITY is to get through rehab.

We already have that in California. 10 rounds in the magazine. Of course, the gang-bangers in L.A. stick to the law, of course.....

common sense gun regulations

Those of us who have been around for a while know that "common sense gun regulations" means total prohibition on gun ownership by anyone except government functionaries.

The anti-gunners never rest. They cannot be reasoned with. They cannot be appeased (every new restriction is a "good first step.") They view the meaning of "compromise" as meaning "not getting complete probition right away." They cannot be bought off. They have no mercy on those who would protect themselves and their families from violence. They cannot be educated for they have already made up their minds. This can only end one way.

  1. The achieve their goal of total prohibiton of gun ownership by everyone except police.
  2. We who believe in freedom are killed defending our freedom from the government's beloved police
  3. the anti-gunners are killed.

I hope you didn’t interpret my post to indicate that I believe Obama and the other Dems care about Rep. Giffords or her well-being or her priorities, any more than they really cared about Wellstone or the others they exploit. Her usefulness to them is as a symbol and a sacred cow, not an actual human being.

I hope he does. The sheeple need to be constantly reminded that this administration is socialist/fascist and will eventually take away all our rights if they stay in power.

Because of fear, it will also put more guns and ammo in the hands of the citizens which is always a good thing.

Sadly, it will not surprise me if Obama uses Rep. Giffords like he uses others for his own advantage and then casts them aside. The question I ask is will Rep. Giffords come back to the House at all?

At some point this year, Gabby will return to the House chamber and receive a standing Ovation. The Dems require it and they will get what they need. The next steps I outlined will follow rapidly from there.

I deliberately refrain from making the obvious jokes about not needing a working brain to serve in Congress, etc.

I agree with you about introducing that bill. I could see the Dems brazenly doing that. However, I thought I read that Gabby Giffords actually carries a gun. Not sure what her stance is on gun issues but I don’t think she would be the one to introduce it. Besides, it’s probably going to be a long time before she gets back to Congress, if ever. It’s not guaranteed she will come all the way back mentally or physically.

Maybe dick should take a gun safety course before he opens his big mouth.
