So much for the environmental Apocalypse of 2010, or whatever it was that the greenies took to calling last April's Deepwater Horizon explosion and subsequent oil spill.
First, it turned out that, just four months after the explosion, nearly all the oil that leaked into the Gulf of Mexico -- once estimated at 200 million gallons -- had disappeared with scant ill effect.
Now a federally funded field study in the journal Science reports that some 200,000 tons of toxic methane gas from the spill -- which experts once estimated would remain in the gulf waters for as long as a decade -- is also gone.
All praise Mother Nature.
Seems that naturally occurring bacterial microbes ate all the methane.
Says John Kessler, a chemical oceanographer at Texas A&M University and a study author: "We were caught off-guard."
To be sure, the tree-huggers were quick to open fire on the report -- as you'd expect, since they used the Deepwater Horizon spill to successfully pressure the White House to shut down offshore drilling in the gulf.
But it's now clear that, as Dr. Judy McDowell of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute told this page last August, "The oil spill [has] definitely [been] blown out of proportion."

After the first Iraq war, when Saddam pulled his troops out of Kuwait, one of their last acts before leaving was to set the Kuwaiti oil wells on fire. The wells burned for months while specialists put the fires out one by one.
Carl Sagan embarrassed himself by proclaiming that computer models predicted a “nuclear winter” all around the earth because of the smoke from the oil wells. Supposedly, the sunlight would be blocked and temperatures would plummet, and we were all doomed.
The Carl Sagans of today are called climatologists, and they are still making scary projections from computer models. And they are just as wrong.
But I guess the environmentalists who projected disaster in the aftermath of the BP oil spill are more akin to the enviornmentalists who predicted that the Exxon Valdez spill would cause the ruin of the southern Alaska coastline for many years. Within a couple of years, there was hardly any evidence of the spill anywhere.
The resiliency and adaptability of life on planet earth does not fit in the environmentalists’ model. They keep hoping for the apocalyptic moment when an environmental disaster will truly change the planet, thereby giving them a platform for gaining power and controlling everyone’s lives.
Well you can say what you want ,BUT WHAT ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING huh? Huh ,What about that?
In the future you will refer to it as “Global Climate Change”.
This way you are never wrong.
I did see a report based on deep dives to the ocean floor in the spill area which described the floor as covered in oil and all local sea life wiped out. It would be unrealistic to suppose the spill caused no damage at all.
I'm sorry.
I'll never do it again.
Is that you BP?
But I, personally, spilled all that oil.
I didn't leave the oil can lid on tight enough, and it leaked out of my backpack.
I'm sorry.
I don’t think Jonah believe there was no damage at all...there had to be SOME. But the regime was talking catastrophic damage and no such thing has happened.
About like their swine flu scare.
Sorry-—that wasn’t the Jonah Goldberg article, it was an editorial.
Don’t let it happen again young man! And just to be sure you won’t, you are prohibited from backpacking in the Gulf in the future and all your permits for currently approved backpacking trips are under review.
I've been hearing the term “Climate Disruption” lately.
To be honest, I believe that there has to be some damage from that spill. The *normal* flow of the Loop Current comes to mind....
[oh, not another Looper]. The gulf loop current slows in winter so the speculation of its demise is a case of encountering the current for the first time, i.e. ignorance and gullability.
I’m a very bad little monkey.
"Aeiiiiiiiii!!!!We're all going to die, we're all going to die, we're all going to die, the Gulf is filling up with oil and soon there'll be no fish or water or people and... we're all going to....what...what did you say?...the situation is not as dire as previously broadcast....wha..what...the situation appears to have been dramatically exaggerated and the problem has mostly been solved by itself? ....Really?...Oh well, there's always global warming...Aeiiiiiiii!!!! we're all going to die!!!!!"
Isn't that the truth. And what's funny is how closely this parallels their failure to account for the flexibility and spontaneous order of free enterprise. The leftist imagination just really struggles with the concept of good things happening from the bottom-up. It's like it doesn't even occur to them.
I AM aware of periodic, typical slowing of the Loop Current. That was NOT what I was referring to.

I am open to hard science and intelligent enough to be able to change my mind. I DO have an open mind on this topic....but not so open that my brains fall out. ;-)
I am also aware that there ARE people who wish to *use* environmental issues to CONTROL...or to satisfy their own GREED.
I've been hearing the term Climate Disruption lately.
Well, climate is always changing so now we should be saying: "It's 'settled science' that that Man is disrupting Global Climate Change". Thus the concern should be "Climate Change Disruption".
