Having a job is more important to people than how much they are paid, according to the first official inquiry into what makes Britons happy...
...The Prime Minister launched the programme in November, in an attempt to create a broader measure of Britain's success than the performance of the economy.
Mr Cameron said governments had a role in helping people "feel better" and that the national wellbeing index should help politicians and wider society "build a better life".
Paul Allin, director of the wellbeing project at the ONS, said the initiative would combine objective data, such as crime, employment and life expectancy rates, with subjective measures, such as fear of crime, job satisfaction and self-reported health, to give "a more complete picture of national wellbeing".
"We want to encourage people to tell us what matters to them," he said.
"The more responses we have to the debate, the more realistic a picture of the UK we will have."

I’ll take the salary. They can keep the job - I’ll find something else to fill my day.
Following John Lewis reasoning, happiness is forcing the taxpayers to send me on a nice month long vacation every year.
After all, spending month in Michigan’s upper peninsula every summer would make me very happy. The fact that I can’t afford to do it is a clear infringment on my rights.
No worries, I’m cheap and shouldn’t cost more than $150 to $200 per day.
Happiness also comes from being able to choose how the fruits of labor are dispensed.
The simple fact is many people (maybe the great majority) work jobs with which they have little love for to make ends meet. Like me. A really sad fact is that many people wouldn’t know what to do with themselves if put in a situation where they had the money to survive without working. However, I’ve never met a retiree (of which I will be one by the end of this year) who regretted retiring.
Lots of gov’t issued beer will help./Sarc
They’re now putting whiskey into cans. Despite the metallic taste it’s sure to get the job done. :)
If you're unemployed, you generally feel useless. So, getting a job and some level of income is better than having a job and no level of income (or being on welfare).
It’s natural to want to be productive and do something useful. Most people prefer to work.
That’s why liberalism discourages work and encourages people to take a check from the government.
Think about a bigger picture.

I know people who flop along without a job for a long time, because nothing is suitable to their desires and salary requirements.
I never understood how no salary was leading to a better life than a salary that was smaller than you'd like. There's a lot to be said for just getting in the workforce. Also, just getting a foot in the door isn't a bad thing either, in case other opportunities arise.
Happiness is not having to pay almost half your salary to the gubmint. By the time they take there piece of the pie, there isn’t a heck of a lot left.
This all seems so familiar, so...progressive!
