PEGGY NOONAN: Why Obama's State of the Union Speech Will Be Unusually Good (Barf Alert!!!)
FOX News.com ^ | January 22, 2011 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 01/22/2011 3:38:47 PM PST by Kaslin

The State of the Union Address is usually among the most important and least memorable of presidential speeches. The speech itself, in an august setting, is an opportunity for a president to break through in a new way. TV and radio carry it live, and it's hard for the average citizen to avoid seeing at least a piece of it. It's a real chance for a White House to tell the American people "This is where we stand, this is why we are here, this is what we believe in."

But most State of the Unions don't measure up. They get beaten down by the staffing process and flattened by the laundry-list aspects: "We'll do this and this and this." There's always too much going on in the speech, and in the end it's usually, in Churchill's phrase, a pudding without a theme.

Personally, I never watch it. I didn't during the Bush or Clinton administrations either. I much prefer to read the text after the fact...it's too detailed to comprehend simply by listening.

She wrote some good material for President Reagan--in the distant past. Too bad she didn't stop when she was ahead.

I’ll be getting out one of my old movies to watch during this snorer. Watching grass grow would be more interesting than this lengthy explusion of hot air.

“This is where we stand, this is why we are here, this is what we believe in.”

Those little items have been explained to the American people till they can’t stand the voice or presence of the person who thinks rephrasing is going to finally sink in. Those who still think this gentleman walks on water, are not IMHO “the American people”.

Apologies to civility and gentlemen.

Peggy has no problem with a communist takeover, so long as it is well-written and stylishly presented.

I’m sorry, but I’ve never heard anything Obama’s said that rose above the most most banal cliche. Nothing but platitudes. He’s a man of the times for the times, the biggest nobody ever to occupy the White House. I can’t stand how conservatives always temper their criticism of Obama with some prefatory remark about his superior oratorical skills. Bullshit.
