Powell still bullish on Obama, not joining govt

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former Secretary of State Colin Powell on Sunday ruled out a return to government service but said he still supports President Barack Obama even though he hasn't yet decided who to vote for in 2012.

The highly respected retired general and moderate Republican made waves when he endorsed Democrat Obama in 2008.

He told CNN's "State of the Union" that he thought Obama's presidency remains a work in progress and that tough issues such as the economy and unemployment need to be addressed. Powell said he hoped the president would tackle these matters in his State of the Union address Tuesday night.

Powell also lamented the lack of civility in political discourse and urged Americans to display tolerance in the wake of the shooting in Tucson, Ariz.

"I think he's got a way to go," Powell said. "I mean, he hasn't achieved all of his purposes, but he's stabilized the economy" and taken on health care reform. "You know, we didn't elect Superman. We elected a human being, Barack Obama."

“Oh boy. The suspense is killing me. I can’t imagine who it will be.”

—LOL. Here’s my wild guess what he’ll say when he endorses Obozo:

If the GOP nominee is Conservative he’ll label the candidate an “extremist, full of harmful vitriol” who doesn’t represent “moderate America” like our “Centrist” president.

If the nominee isn’t Conservative, he’ll offer feint praise for the candidate, but then attack the nominee’s more Conservative VP pick for being an “extremist, full of harmful vitriol who doesn’t...”

“he thought Obama’s presidency remains a work in progress”

Yeh Obama has not quite totally destroyed our country yet.

Powell seems to be liberal first and American second. If he still likes the one in the White House despite his record of bowing to foreign leaders and talking down the USA then Powell isn’t the patriot some think he is.

My take on this is a little different.
I think Powell damned Barry with faint praise and is putting distance between them .
He acted like a politician by trying to have it both ways , seeming to support him , while also tap dancing away.
Calling Barry a work in progress is pretty insulting and sounds like Powell is calling him a failure , but, in a mild way.
The last part of the article is telling.
“I will always vote for the person who I think is best qualified,” he said.
“I am not committed to any candidate until I see all the candidates.
I have not yet seen anybody on the Republican side
that I am ready to commit to

and I am not committed to President Obama either.”

Al Gore could become world’s first carbon billionaire

Last year Mr Gore’s venture capital firm loaned a small California firm $75m to develop energy-saving technology.

The company, Silver Spring Networks, produces hardware and software to make the electricity grid more efficient.

The deal appeared to pay off in a big way last week, when the Energy Department announced $3.4 billion in smart grid grants, the New York Times reports. Of the total, more than $560 million went to utilities with which Silver Spring has contracts.

The move means that venture capital company Kleiner Perkins and its partners, including Mr Gore, could recoup their investment many times over in coming years.

Good points.

I get this vibe about Powell (beyond the obvious racial aspects, and things that are usually mentioned) that I’ve had when I’ve been around very Passive-Aggressive people. He’s not the kind of person who is out shouting his views, but he’s very, very opinionated and domineering, and he seems to have these lasting (unconscious) resentments.

It always has to be HIS way- even if you don’t realize that that’s what’s going on at the time because it’s so subtle. And if he doesn’t get HIS way, he’ll just knife you in the back at the most inopportune time (like he did to McCain). Very strange man.

(Sorry to wax all pop-psychology there...)

Pop Psychology aside, Colin Powell is and always was a product of affirmative action enabled by a very long list of RINO politicians including and in particular GWB. He is not a man conflicted by his principals. He is in the purist sense a political opportunist.

“Calling Barry a work in progress is pretty insulting and sounds like Powell is calling him a failure , but, in a mild way”

—I have to disagree. I think a “work in progress” is just a subtle way of saying “give him more time”...

...Which isn’t any different from what most Libs spouting their talking points always say. I swear, listen sometime to black Obama supporters who call into right-leaning shows: the first thing they will always say when asked if they think Obozo has been successful is, “He just needs more time- it’s only been two years!”

Powell will use his influence to try to damage the GOP nominee, because it’s his nature.

Change the color of Obama’s skin to white and the story would be different.

Agree. And I always remember this tidbit when thinking about Colin Powell:

“...President Ronald Reagan stood at the Brandenburg Gate in the divided city of Berlin and urged Mikhail Gorbachev, general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, to “tear down this wall!”
At the time, several members of the President’s staff opposed the remark... Advisor Colin Powell agreed, declaring it was “unpresidential.” Reagan ended the debate by saying, “I think we’ll leave it in.”

President Ronald Reagan

America has stopped making a lot of things, including leaders. No, we don't make 'em like him anymore
