DeWine's assistance not enough for bicyclist who collided with car (No Good Deed Goes Unpunished)

DeWine's assistance not enough for bicyclist who collided with car Monday, January 24, 2011 11:29 PM By Alan Johnson The Columbus Dispatch

In Mike DeWine's first week as Ohio attorney general, his car collided with a bicyclist Downtown - and he ended up having the man taken on a 100-mile round trip to be treated by the officeholder's personal physician.

Jonathan Kirk, 28, a dishwasher at Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails, wasn't seriously injured, but he was shaken up in the Jan. 13 morning accident.

According to a Columbus police report, confirmed by accounts from DeWine and Kirk, Kirk rode his bicycle against a red light at Front and Main streets. He was knocked to the pavement by a 2008 Chrysler 300 in which DeWine was a passenger. A DeWine staff member, Robert Lagergren, was driving DeWine's personal car.

Kirk, who said he has no insurance because he can't afford it, didn't want to go to a hospital emergency room and left the scene to make a scheduled appointment with his parole officer. Story continues below Advertisement

However, DeWine tracked him down and insisted that he see a doctor.

The attorney general had a staff member, Ann O'Donnell, drive Kirk to Jamestown, Ohio, about 30 miles southeast of Dayton, to see DeWine's physician, Dr. Kevin Sherrett, who is also the Greene County coroner.

"He's my personal doctor, and he's extremely thorough," DeWine said. "I thought it would be the fastest way. I called him up, told his office it was an emergency, and he said to bring him over, he would fit him in."

The doctor did not charge for the visit, but DeWine said he asked to be billed for the cost of X-rays.

Kirk told The Dispatch that he doesn't know the results of an X-ray taken at Sherrett's office because he doesn't have a home phone and his cell phone was crushed in the accident.

"When I got up (the day after the accident), I wasn't able to make it to work. I was so sore," Kirk said. He said his right ankle and foot were injured.

O'Donnell said she gave Kirk $70 in cash to make up for missing a day's work and bought him lunch.

The next day, Kirk called the attorney general's office seeking payment for missing a second day's work and reimbursement for his cell phone. He suggested he might go to the news media with his story, she said.

At that point, DeWine conferred with attorneys in his office and decided to provide no more help to Kirk.

"They did do a good thing," Kirk said of DeWine's help. "But it's not like I'm asking for a whole lot. I'm just asking for $80 and a new phone."

You're oblivious to right and wrong. You must support entitlements, because according to you, it's just terrible that a "cheap, rich" guy refuses to be shaken down (after providing help) by a common lowlife who expects others to pay for his mistakes.

Not a very conservative outlook on life.

Mike DeWine must support entitlements because he dragged this guy to see an MD and laid 80$ on him even though (so he claims) the cyclist ran the red light and caused the dust up

Mike DeWine liked playing Mr Nice Guy but only under his own rules. DeWine is now a laughing stock...this will come back to plague him. His cheapness.

"So he claims?"

The police report states that Kirk ADMITTED to being in the wrong.

Are you that dense or that blinded by your hatred?

The fact the cyclist said he`d go to the media if he didn`t get what he wanted should clue us all in it was a demand. The cyclist was at fault. DeWine had already gone above and beyond. Were it me, I`d have offered to take him to the nearest ER and been done with it, assuming his bike didn`t damage my vehicle. These punkass kids... no matter what you do for them, it`s never enough.

DeWine is NOT an obama supporter for pete’s sake. Some of you on here are truly ignorant. DeWine is a Republican.

The bicyclist was at fault, and DeWine went above and beyond the call of duty. I think if this has continued, he would’ve been trying to shake him down for a very long time - even though DeWine wasn’t at fault. I suspect the bicyclist was an obama supporter - shake downs are part of their MO.

If Dewine wants to play benevolent dictator then he should not have gotten involved. Lets get real. Another $80 and new cell phone is pocket change for DeWine

If I’d tried to help a cyclist who had collided with my car through no fault of mine and that cyclist called up the next day demanding money or he’d go to the news media, I’d have cut him off, too.

So would any sane individual. You’re hearing about this because the cyclist did go to the media, you realize this, don’t you?

It was attempted extortion.

You have to be in control just like DeWine....think about it. I’m sure Dewine was delighted when the poor idiot cyclist asked for more. Giving DeWine a chance to get all puffed up and indignant at such outrageous ($80+cell phone) extortion

“The very thought of it! I, Mike DeWine refuse to succumb to such blackmail!!!” “Officers, arrest this man and see he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!” “Our children must be taught this is wrong”

They both went to the media. Mike DeWine’s side is in this article too. DeWine is trying to get out in front of this mess that he could have avoided if he wasn’t so cheap

Well, you just go right on your merry way and pay people who demand money of you for any old reason, then. You’re really coming off badly here, dennisw. You’ve been around FR a long time, at least your screen name has. I don’t recall your sounding like such a complete idiot before.

Are you OK? Maybe you should see a doctor. Not that I’m admitting any fault if you’ve busted a vein and are stroking out because of this. Don’t come asking me for money.

If I was at fault in an accident, it wouldn’t have occurred to me to ask for anything from the other person involved.

Well, except that they please accept my apologies for probably scaring the hell out of them.

.....must be something wrong with my thinking.

They guy ran a red light, dennisw. I don’t give a rats butt about DeWine, who he is, or whatever.

Seems pretty straightforward to me. Dumbass on a bike runs a red light and has collision with car coming through the intersection; person in car helps with personal doctor and bills for evaluation; cyclist figures out who the guy is and asks for more money, threatening to go to the media if he doesn’t comply.

I am having a hard time understanding your point of view here. On the surface, it doesn’t seem to fit with your posting history from what I have seen in the past on FR, but that is just my opinion. It is puzzling to me.

Kirk should be thankful he didn’t get a ticket.
My problem with DeWine is that he sent a female staffer to deal with a 28 year old male parolee.

It's obvious he gave it some thought:

At that point, DeWine conferred with attorneys in his office and decided to provide no more help to Kirk.

It's also obvious that you never read the story and that you have a total disregard for the facts.

DeWine playing the outraged padron role...This fails to impress me. Politicians extort and blackmail each other every day of the week, even Sunday when they go to church. I’m surprised you can’t see through his “outraged” shtick with the cyclist.

DeWine is just plain cheap. In the course of his life he has extorted and been extorted many times. Not for money but just doing political deals. It’s called wheeling and dealing

“...for a guy like DeWine there is no difference between $80 and $400...”

Hey Dennie, you busy tonight? There may still be time to get you to Washington to claim the extra seat next to the First Lady (well, the extra half-seat...she takes a little extra)!

You would be perfect, a natural: Like you Obama is a guy who can’t stand other peoples’ financial success, and he doesn’t know the difference between a balanced budget and $13 trillion!

In other words a loser, just like you!

Just curious, dennisw, how do you know DeWine “went” to the media?

I doesn’t say anywhere that he did, and I highly doubt that he did. The most LIKELY scenario is that the extortionist did go to the newspaper, who then got copies of the police report and called DeWine who gave them his account.

I can’t believe you are saying he should “just pay” because he is a “rich bastard” and “has the money”.

That is pretty much what we hear on the national and international level from our socialist administration and other countries around the world regarding what we should do with our wealth.
