Skip to comments.(From the UK Telegraph) Barack Obama's State of the Union speech will be meaningless

The whole pundit class (myself included) will be parsing every word of President Barack Obamas State of the Union speech (SOTU, for the uninitiated) tomorrow. But the dirty little secret is that it wont matter. I mean, who remembers what is said in these things? Within a week, itll be forgotten.
Politicos Mike Allen made the point cleverly in Playbook yesterday by publishing an extract from the SOTU:
[E]ven tough debates can be conducted in a civil tone, and our differences cannot be allowed to harden into anger. To confront the great issues before us, we must act in a spirit of goodwill and respect for one another and I will do my part. Tonight I will set out an agenda for a nation that competes with confidence; an agenda that will raise standards of living and generate new jobs. Tonight I announce an American Competitiveness Initiative, to encourage innovation
Pretty predicable stuff, eh? But as Allen says: You dope: Thats the State of the Union, 2006, delivered by George W. Bush. If Obama had said exactly the same thing tomorrow night, I bet no more than 1% of the country would have noticed that it had been said before.
Remember, though, that its equally guaranteed that in terms of lasting impact the speech will be ultimately meaningless.

So far, it appears to be shaping up as the east coast version of “Together We Thrive” complete with a lot of “heroes” and exploitation. Barry could possibly pick up another 10 point bounce before it’s all over.
As the late swimmer would say...”lie after lie after lie”.
With extremely rare exceptions, SOTU addresses are completely meaningless. I made this point on another thread yesterday. Don’t need a pundit to tell it to me. SOTU was never intended to be a big, theatrical spectacle. They only gradually became so in the TV age. Thomas Jefferson wrote his and sent them to Congress, and all presidents followed suit until mid to late 19th century. Don’t remember off hand who started the practice of giving them before a joint session of Congress, but even then they weren’t a big deal until TV came along. Now they’re the Chinese food of political speeches. An hour later it’s like they never happened. They are quickly replaced by spin and are quickly forgotten.
And not one of the gazillions of promises of utopia, massive new programs, and comity ever come true. They are pure fantasyland.
The reviews have been written already, and most of them are positive.
being perfectly clear, and with laser like focus,I'd say, your shovel ready presidency with your narcissistic ways and your inability to stay in DC and even act presidential will be your downfall. The era of no hope and radical change is coming to an end.
Does anyone know if they have hauled the fake Greek columns out of the warehouse for this speech. It sure is being hyped enough for it.
True. By the way, I just went out to Google and looked up which president reversed Jefferson’s precedent of sending written SOTU reports to Congress. Wouldn’t you know it. Answer is Woodrow Wilson, certainly one of the top five worst presidents ever, and our first Leftist prez in the modern sense. Typical of so many on the Left, Wilson liked the sound of his own voice apparently. Enough so he felt compelled to break with Jefferson.
You got that right. Obama's on his knees all puckered up, in full reelection mode.
" And I especially want to thank you for bringing me
all that tea. Tea is very big around here since Nov 2010."
The Marxist is even starting to invoke Reagan. I would not be surprised
if he proposed we put Reagan on Mt Rushmore (as a way to get votes).
Here's another clue (/snix).
Last year's DNC poster.
This year's DNC poster
Obama is baptized in the fire of faith.
Obama's been saved. Thank you, Jesus.
DNC is ordering 5 million of these.
“Chinese food of political speeches” - nice line.
But if they took the SOTU off the airways, wouldn’t we miss watching all our media pundits in TV Land practicing their faux gravitas?
Haha, yeah, all the blowhards in and out of politics would have to invent some other spectacle to keep us serfs entertained.
The black ones look like shadow rabbits.
I, I, I...Me, Me, Me...
Furthermore, me, me, me...I, I, I...
Am I the first to say, "Just doing the job that American journalists won't."
No? Oh, well.
"Civility is not a tactic or a sentiment, it is the determined choice of trust over cynicism, of community over chaos. And this commitment, if we keep it, is a way to shared accomplishment."
-- George W. Bush, January 20, 2001
Apologies to all those nice people slogging away at more conservative news outlets.
The only question is whether Kraut will faint during it.
Pray for America
Indeed. But the sycophants of the MSM will be driven into full-fawning orgasmic bliss by The One's every cliched phrase. Me, I have to re-arrange my sock drawer.
Actually, he's the Telegraph's US Editor, in Washington.
Actually, the speech will be beyond meaningless....especially once I get my hands on my remote. =.=
To me everything he says is meaningless. I thnk that he will be talking to his disciples as they pant and pine for every word that comes from their messiah’s mouth.
Shakespeare adequately described Obama’s, or any President’s, SOTU speech.
Much Ado Over Nothing.
I can’t stomach another Obama speech but I watched Clinton’s SOTU that he gave after falling into the slimepit of the Lewinsky business. I was talking to a woman where I was working and the subject came up. She seemed amazed that he could give such a great speech while under so much pressure. I listened to the whole thing and I swear I could not name one thing he actually said, it was a perfect display of meaningless doubletalk, given with the proper cadence and timing but utterly meaningless from start to finish. What the woman heard was simply what she imagined he said. It left me feeling only despair that voters are so easily duped.
He didn’t seem to realize there are more than those two possibilities. How about disastrous one termer?
