After a number of conservatives criticized the White House for sitting idly by while Chinese pianist Lang Lang tickled the ivories with an anti-American ballad at last weeks State Dinner for President Hu Jintao, the White House responded Monday condemning the criticism and insisting the song, My Motherland, was no insult to the United States.
As we reported Sunday, the pianist claims to have chosen the song because playing the tune at the White House banquet can help us, as Chinese people, feel extremely proud of ourselves and express our feelings through the song. The song was written for the 1956 Chinese war film, Battle on Shangganling Mountain which depicts PRC soldiers as the heroes and Americans as the bad guys.
Although Lang Lang performed the song without accompanying lyrics, the original song portrays Americans as wolves (or jackals), greeted by the hunting rifle. Conservatives were quick to point out the misnomer.
John Hayward, a writer for Human Events even compared playing the song at a White House state dinner to an American president providing music from Rambo II during a state visit to Vietnam.
The joke was not lost on Chinese internet writers who acclaimed Lang Langs choice of music. Its deeply meaningful to play this in the United States, but I dont know if the Americans can understand? Ha ha, Asia One news reports. Radio and television host Glenn Beck went so far as to demand President Obamas chief protocol officer be fired over the apparent gaffe: But when asked about the mishap on Monday, White House spokesman Tommy Vietor told ABC News that any suggestion that [the song] was an insult to the United States is just flat wrong. As Lang Lang has stated before, he plays this song regularly because it is one of his favorite Chinese melodies, which is very widely known and popular in China for its melody.
Lang Lang played the song without lyrics or reference to any political themes during the entertainment portion of the State Dinner. He simply stated the songs title and noted it was well known in China, Vietor said.
WH Chief of Protocol Capricia Penavic Marchall in pink on her ***.
Elect Sarah Palin for President 2012
Re-Elect President Sarah Palin 2016
Penavic is clearly an idiot.
With the rise of the Chinese empire, we are going to have to deal with bad music, bad piano players and abusive mothers. Sigh...
An idiot, a tool or a fool. Perhaps all three.
Wonder what would happen if the NAACP invited someone to play for them, and they tickled the ivories with Dixie?
Yup. And if my band played “Dixie” to a Black Panther Party meeting, would I be allowed to argue that I love the melody?
With a band name like White Dog you are already blacklisted.
" And I especially want to thank you for bringing me
all that tea. Tea is very big around here since Nov 2010."
The Marxist is even starting to invoke Reagan. I would not be surprised
if he proposed we put Reagan on Mt Rushmore (as a way to get votes).
Here's another clue (/snix).
Last year's DNC poster.
This year's DNC poster
Obama is baptized in the fire of faith.
Obama's been saved. Thank you, Jesus.
ROTFL----looks like a ringing campaign theme to me.
DNC is ordering 5 million of these.
They killed millions and millions of their own people for God's sake. We are the only civilized people. The sooner we get that through our heads..the better off we will all be.
Shoulda played: “Show Me The Way To Go home.”
I say playing the song was wrong and I say no more.
Well, since a song’s lyrics don’t mean anything, let’s hope the next time the Obamas are sitting in balcony seats watching a concert, the band plays Van Halen’s ‘Jump’.
Since the USA is not O’s country, of course, he felt no insult.
Not if the former Senator and future Mayor of Chicago has any say in the matter.
Maybe if Obama goes to China;they can play the theme from the Jeffersons?
Nah should have played “Ai Zi Yo” (sp?) which was a pro-tiananmen song that was put together by all the Hong Kong and Singapore singers after the massacre. That would have raised the hackles in the appropriate direction. It basically goes something like “Love freedom, all for freedom....”
Should have played ‘Chopsticks”.
“abolish racism” my ass.
I guess if by “abolish racism” they mean
I’d believe it. That’s what they truly mean.
It’s ok to preserve one’s culture-—as long as it isn’t white Western civilization.
For any who missed it, that’s Tomorrow Belongs To Me, from “Cabaret.” The Hitlerjugend arise.
