Plus it went against the company’s marketing plan where they used Bears’ players in advertising. You could make conflict of interest as a basis for what seems to me to be a solid reason for canning this insubordinate idiot.
Here in Da ‘Burgh a lot of local businesses run advertising campaigns with Steelers’ players, and I pity any damnfool employee who’d show up for work in Ravens or Browns gear.

He is a salesman. He was NOT on the clock. He was of course employed by the firm at the time, but he was not on the clock.
Now in a city full of Bears fans and likely full of salesmen trying to pretend to be Bears fans too, his small bit of counter-marketing, ie marketing to the none Bears niche, might or might not have worked for him. But as the guy at the dealship that offerred him a new job said, good salesmen are hard to find.
