Justice Samuel Alito skips State of the Union [Six of nine will attend]
Politico ^ | January 25, 2011 | Meredith Shiner

Six out of nine members of the Supreme Court will attend Tuesday night’s State of the Union, just one year after President Barack Obama openly chided the court for its Citizen’s United decision on campaign finance in the annual address.

The court did not make available the names of the justices who will attend, but Justice Samuel Alito, Jr. has a speaking engagement at the University of Hawaii law school, whose website is currently running an “Aloha Alito” slide show on its homepage.

Alito was at the center of the awkward and unusual 2010 exchange with the president during last year’s address. When Obama challenged the decision of the majority of justices in the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission case, which lifted many of the restrictions on corporate giving to federal campaigns, cameras in the chamber caught Alito mouthing the words “not true” in response to Obama’s critique.

The other likely no-shows are justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, who rarely attend the speech.

I shouldn’t think that the Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States should be required, precedent or otherwise, to attend a so-called State of the Union Address by a person who won’t even prove he is a citizen.

Obama broke protocol when he slapped the judges. They owe him zero. I hope none of them show up.

She won’t be there either — she’s still upset about what Obama did to her husband.

Isn’t she connected in someway to Obama’s political career?

She was married to Jack Ryan who ran against The Rookie until The Rookie’s campaign leaked the couple’s bitter divorce papers.

Already has if you’re reading the NYT. They have a front page article on Thomas’ wife’s unreported salary at The Heritage Foundation.

Many people don’t realize that the presidency is the first election Obama ever won without having first had his viable competition eliminated.

And he didn’t need to eliminate McCain.

Least of all by those who could make him prove it. I wouldn´t let a damned one of them in my house either.

We know that at least 1 will be there -- the "Wise Latina" that Obama put on the Court. Other than that I don't know.

Maybe we should start a betting pool. What is the over/under for Supremes attending? I make it 5.

And he didn’t need to eliminate McCain.

McCain did that all by himself. One-by-one he removed every rational for anybody but a Republican to vote for him. In the end it was, "Vote for me. I'm a veteran." Important yes, but insufficient these days. Anybody could have told him that -- especially post-Bill Clinton.

Why should SCOTUS attend Obama’s campaign kickoff speech tonight?

I’d say his viable competition WAS eliminated when the media and the Rinos saddled us with McCain.
