My husband and I are being interviewed for our local news station in about 1 hour as a "regular families" opinion and expectations of the Presidents speech tonight.
Any good talking points or comments to throw out there? I know you all can help me with some good ones!
You need “talking points” to talk about yourselves?
You might want to check-in for a 72 hour observation.
Here’s one that will get your interview on the cutting room floor: Where’s the birth certificate?
Just kidding (about you saying that not that it would get deleted).
Expectation are low as he has promised it all before and not carried through. No Job growth, spending our of control, etc.
Ask how come the Gov. of Hawaii couldn’t find Obama’s birth certificate.
I expect him to say investment every time he means government spending.
Co-opting the Tea Party’s message is nice and all, but talk is one thing and action is another. His talk does not match his walk.
Everything this president has done has made things worse not better. He has enriched unions and Wall Street Fat cats with bailouts and payoffs.... the walk this man has been taking is NOT what he has been saying. Why shoud we trust a known liar now?
Oh, and where is the long form Birth Certificate? Why isn’t congress demanding that from him? We have zero assurances the man even has the the legal authority according to the constitution for even giving a state of the Union address. He isn’t a Natural Born Citizen.
“after last years “Summer of recovery”, I will be surprised if Obama pledges to cut spending and create jobs, since he announced he had accomplished that mission last spring.”
How to tell he’s lying; lips move.
Mention concerns for economy, debt spending and Obamacare. DO NOT disrespect the politicians (stick to issues). DO NOT use cuss/swear words.
When the interviewer asks you a question that seems odd (like, do you think the Republicans are obstructing Obama’s attempt to fix the economy?), then do not answer the question! But answer the question that you would have liked to have been asked (example: Is Obama obstructing efforts to fix the economy?).
They’re putting lipstick on the pig again by trying to make people believe that he’s a moderate now.
Since Obama is now quoting Reagan, mention that you are waiting for him to say “government isn’t the answer to the problem - government is the problem!”
His rhetoric never seems to match his actions, especially on the transparency issue. Big disappointment.
Oh great advise. If asked a horrible question, rephrase it with what SHOULD have been asked.
I expect him to ignore and deny the 14 Trillion debt he has created for the last two years.
And to tell us he wants to “invest” (spend) more to create jobs.
This president talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk.
All this talk about jobs is just a deflection from all the dead bodies coming home from Afghanistan.
His proposed new investments sound like a risky spending scheme.
No country ever deficit spent itself into prosperity.
I thought the speech contained some hateful partisan rhetoric.
Regards,
TS
Relax, take a deep breath, and speak your (own) mind. You’ll do just fine. Unless you’re a libtard (you’re not, I’ll presume) you don’t need a ‘teleprompter’ - or other people to tell you what to say.
I don’t think you need talking points, just be honest. Do you know people who are out of work? Do you know people whose houses are being foreclosed upon? Do you know people who are worried about whether inflation is going to be eating away the cost of what little savings they have left? If so, ask how tonight’s speech is going to help them.
When Washington gets serious about our debt, our unemployment rate, our inflation and our security, maybe we will pay more attention to them but, for now, I don’t see many people in Washington listening to us - from either party.
I got an e-mail today from my Republican congressman and he wants a pat on the back for introducing a bill to stop earmarks named after members of congress. It’s well and good but it’s not going nearly far enough. We need members of congress who care more about this country than their own vanity and there are but a rare few in Washington that have the right priorities.
BTW, good luck and have a DVR rolling.
Will you be allowed to say that you expect the President to say one thing and as usual do another.
IOW, talk about cutting the deficit and then spend more money we don’t have.
Why is he punishing AZ. when it is being ravaged by illegal aliens who are taking away jobs from Americans?
the man has passed bills which have not been popular with the middle and now he has them passed he thinks he can move to the middle and have us all think that he’s a moderate.
When he says investment he means yet again spend.
Obama can read a speech which has been written for him but the fact remains he says one thing and then does another, for instance for two years he has said jobs and now he complains that the GOP are looking at health care when that is all he did .
Just because he can read a speech I see no reason why I should believe him when his actions have been proven to be very out of the mainstream
Also, stop setting up new agencies and governmental functions. For example,
Obama proposes to establish a new drug development center because the private sector isn't investing enough and bringing drugs to market quickly enough. This is a problem caused by the FDA approval process. Reform the FDA. Don't create another government agency to deal with the problems caused by the first government agency.
STOP THE DEFICIT SPENDING.
Given the expectations he set for in 2010 versus the results we’ve seen, we would expect a speech that:
1. Includes an apology for his first 2 years.
2. Acknowledges that his jobs ideas were utter failures and should be scrapped.
3. Recognizes that the recent election was a message that he has to do business completely differently.
4. Promises to listen to the American people, starting with signing a repeal of the healthcare plan.
5. Promises to reduce the spending to at least the levels of 2010 - not just freezing the budget where we are today.
Of course this won’t happen, but they’re asking what you’d expect to see... not predicting what we will see.
Ask why Obama wants to freeze spending at record levels instead of cutting spending like the majority of Americans favor.
You might as well decline the interview since the tone and message is entirely set by the video editor, not you.
Obama can NOT spend 2 years imposing regulations by his czars and then expect us to believe him when he says he’s going to cut regulations that get in the way of job creation.
His policies and entire agenda ARE the problem, NOT the solution!
A few:
- Why is he going to talk about freezing discretionary spending when he has more than doubled it in two years?
- Why is he suddenly a economic conservative when he has just spent more than all previous presidents . . . combined?
- Does he realize that the government cannot create private sector jobs, which are the only jobs that fuel our economy - the government can only create (or not create) an atmosphere that fosters job growth.
There are some good responses here (love the Birth Certificate ones)....but you probably want something that will have you on TV.
Some ideas:
Where are the Jobs?? Like his predecessor...Obama claimed he was going to create jobs. Where are the jobs?? Instead of having the Chinese premier at the White House...how about bringing the jobs back from China...
Govt Spending: We have spent trillions on bank bailouts and business bailouts...yet our economy is stillstagnating. Are we going to spend more tax dollars to bail out failed businesses?
Our state and local governments are raising our taxes on everything. Will there be relief on the Federal level to offset the increases in taxes state and locally?
“Do you think the Republicans are obstructing Obama’s attempts to fix the economy?”
Answer: They haven’t had a chance to do that - they only came into power 3 weeks ago. The Democrats have had free reign to do whatever “fixing” they wanted to do... and by my reckoning, they have utterly failed to improve anything.
Tell them you expect to hear him tell us how he’s going to spend us into prosperity, while cutting government waste and fraud. Again.
Ask him if Nashville has recovered from the flood yet.
I would focus on how Obama’s lousy ecomomy has impacted your family.
How Obama’s multi-billion dollar vacations have got to stop.
And how - in his SOTU speech tonight - you hope he will own up to the change that voters made clear last November, and that how Obama should make the drastic changes that America demands. That he should concede his tax and spend strategies are and were wrong. And that he should listen to the majority of States who DO NOT WANT Obamacare.
For starters...
How often does he use the word “investment” in order to make the US “competitive”?
“Investment” equals “New Government Spending”
The only transparency we are getting from this administration comes when you try to board an airplane.
Opps, scar.
With all the talk about government investing in America, I have to ask why should we get behind that with the government’s record at picking winners and losers?
Will we be going to go into business as the worlds supplier of $5,000 dollar toilet seats?
How does it help our global competitiveness to make sure that GE has enough in tax breaks, incentives, and regulations so that no small business can possibly compete with it?
Even social security is providing a negative return for many people.
The kind of investments they are talking about makes all of us less free and as a result less competitive.
I would say that I really didn’t expect much, just more rhetoric about change and hope, more political promises as he kicks off his re-election campaign, when for the last two years, the change has been bad, and taken away our hopes. Unemployment is at record highs; spending and the deficiet are at record highs, and with the raising of the debt ceiling, and printing of money, inflation is going to rise as well; Obama doesn’t seem to stay in DC for very long to address these concerns, and seems to care more about the state of other countries than the state of our union! That is what I would say.
Here is a clever little video that provides some perspective on the size of our problem and the symbolic, but meaningless, gestures to do something about it.
Have a couple of barf bags prominently displayed.
Lots of talk about fiscal responsibility and belt tightening....with no specifics on what would actually *be* cut. But a long litany of things that the administration WANTS to spend money on. That they WILL spend on. Errrr...Invest in.
Just please say “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?”
Damn! That’s a winner!
At least drunken sailors are spending money they earned themselves, doing honest labor, which is more than can be said for Zero.
Tell them that we are adding to our debt to the tune of 4 BILLION dollars per day if spending is simply frozen*. This is with record low interest rates, btw. Spending must be CUT.

Tell them Obama was shown to be a serial liar when it came to health reform:
1. It will not bend down the cost curve, according to the government’s own figures;
2. It will not reduce the federal deficit unless you believe in all the smoke and mirrors required to make it look that way;
3. Many millions of Americans will NOT be able to keep their current health plan even if they love it;
4. Taxes will go up for virtually all Americans to help pay for this even though Obama promised that taxes for “non-rich” families would not go up by even a dime. A great list of those taxes is here: http://www.atr.org/obamacare-taxes-final-tab-a4744#
In light of this string of lies, assert matter-of-factly that you have no particular reason to believe any of Obama’s SOTU promises.
If they keep blaming conditions on Bush and on how bad things were when they came into power, there are some appropriate lyrics in the song by Brian Burns called “The car was upside down when I got here”.
