Harry Reid blasts Obama on earmarks

By: Shira Toeplitz January 25, 2011 04:18 PM EST

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid blasted President Barack Obama on earmarks in advance of his State of the Union address Tuesday, when he’s expected to call for a ban.

“I think this is an issue that any president would like to have, that takes power away from the legislative branch of government,” said Reid. “I think it’s the wrong thing to do. I don’t think it’s helpful. It’s a lot of pretty talk, but it only gives the president more power. He’s got enough power already.”

Nonetheless, Reid said he looked forward to the president’s annual address, which he hailed as a “vision for rebuilding America.”

Senate Republicans also blasted the president in advance of his speech, where he is expected to call for a five-year spending freeze. Republicans say it does not go far enough. They want a return to 2008 spending levels, a plan backed by House Republicans.

“The problem with that is it freezes in to place an extraordinary increase in spending over the past two years,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters. “So it strikes most of us that the effort by the House of Representatives to get us back to the 2008 spending levels would be the direction to go if we really wanted to have an impact on our annual deficit problems.”

I’m surprised the Secret Service doesn’t just traipse on over to Capitol Hill to have a lil’ chat with Whorehouse Harry.

I’m tempted to think this is coordinated triangulation between Reid and Obama. However, each branch is very jealous of its own power. Reid could be sincere, in the way a mangy dog sincerely doesn’t want anyone taking his bone. Like old Sen Byrd used to be.

Harry Reid has quite the vitriolic mouth on him. Play nice, Harry, or your articulate, non negro dialect leader will be very unhappy with you.

Harry, you’re so right. Let’s take away some of that unwarranted power by repealing Obamacare!

GAMBIT. With DemonRATS, nothing is as it seems. You cannot take anything they say at face value. This is a way of recruiting Republicans to join with DemonRATS to make sure that Obama “COMPROMISES” on the earmark issue.

This is a ruse to stifle the Tea Party call for earmarks.

Earmarks create an inherent conflict of interest. A legislator is less inclined to ask, “Is this the right thing to do for the country?” and more inclined to ask, “Does this benefit me, my friends, my campaign contributors or my chances for re-election?” Of course, with earmarks, the answer to the second question is almost always “yes”. Take away the earmarks, and greater consideration will be given to the merits of the bill.

If BO was serious, he would just come out and say that he will veto any bill that contains earmarks. Another sham from the Flim-Flam man.

I would think any voter astute enough to know what an earmark is would not fall for the ruse. And anyone stupid enough to fall for it wouldn’t know what he was talking about when he said “earmark.” Maybe he’ll explain the word in his speech. In that case, it’d be a good way to fool the rubes.

In a way, I don’t have a problem with the socalled earmark. Its just what some of those earmarks go to. I think that the congress should set up a bill in which each member receives an allotment of spending on a yearly basis. They would then have to state for the record what that money is to be spent on and it should be voted for approval in a bipartisan way. These would then be bundled together and not to exceed predetermined limits and submitted for a vote for both chambers for approval and eventually the president. Afterall, their job is to bring their tax dollars back home to their respective states.

Not really. I know that's how it ends up. But that's not their job. The money is supposed to fund the general government. Not slush around back and forth in a neverending payola scam.

They should NOT end earmarks. To do so would give the president the power to direct spending.

Well think about it, I think that bringing our tax dollars back to the states is a good thing, mind you not for something worthless. Look at the waste in federal gov’t. The numbers they throw around is astounding.
