YAKIMA, Wash. — More than 50 demonstrators marched in front of the federal courthouse in downtown Yakima on Tuesday to protest the arrest of 30 illegal immigrants in Ellensburg last week.

Most of the demonstrators were students at Ellensburg High School, where some of the suspects’ children attended.

The marchers say the arrested people were only trying to support their families by working in the United States. The families will be split up by the arrests, critics say.

Charging documents filed in U.S. District Court allege that the defendants used counterfeit identity documents to obtain work.

Related story..Federal agents early Thursday morning arrested 14 Ellensburg area residents related to criminal charges of manufacture and purchase of counterfeit identity and employment documents, according to a news release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Another 16 were taken into custody on administrative immigration violations, and three of those were later released for humanitarian reasons, according to the news release issued this morning.

All 30 are Mexican nationals, according to ICE/HSI spokeswoman Lorie Dankers in Seattle, and the three released were women.

Assisting the federal agents were Kittitas County Sheriff's deputies and Ellensburg police officers.

At least two of the locations where search warrants were carried out and arrests made were at Millpond Mobile Manor on Canyon Road southeast of Ellensburg and a mobile home park on West University Way.

A helicopter with a searchlight was part of the federal operation.

The 14 were expected to make their initial appearance in federal court this morning in Yakima.

There were some 70 arrests in a series of immigration raids across southern Michigan last week.

"The families will be split up by the arrests..."

The government should never break up a family in this manner. A high priority should be placed upon maintaining family integrity throughout the entire deportation process.

“”Most of the demonstrators were students at Ellensburg High School,””

___

Looks like the voters in the Ellensburg School District need to remove some principals and teachers who were undoubtedly encouraging the High School Students to demonstrate.

The parents, not the government nor the laws, are responsible for putting their children in this situation.

Glad to see the comments on the website are against the illegals. My town’s newspaper has lefties who must sit there all day commenting on every article & opinion. I sometimes think I must be living in San Francisco!

Who really cares about what high school kids think.

Ubtil they’re old enough to vote their opinions are meaningless.

They should all be disciplined for skipping classes. But in looney-left Washington State that won’t happen.

Deport all those arrested forthwith.

50 protesters, mostly high school students. These kids really need to learn how to protest, I remember my entire high school walking out to support/protest this or that - oh wait that was the 60’s, never mind.

These GD felons should be deported AFTER they do hard labor in prison for a couple of years.

Horse Hockey!!!!!!!!!

Illegal is illegal, PERIOD. I could care less about splitting up families. Maybe THEY should have thought of that before they snuck across the border. Sucks to be them or their family, but thats the way it is. What about families split up when some native-born felon gets sent to the big house for a decade or more? Or should we give them a pass too?

You sound like a bleeding-heart lefty, certainly NOT like a conservative.

Me too. I did it to get out of class. I didn’t care what the protest was.
