WILMINGTON - January 25, 2011 (WPVI) -- Action News spoke with a cabbie who says he left John Wheeler off on a corner in downtown Wilmington two days before he turned up dead in a landfill.
It fills another gap in the mystery surrounding Wheeler's bizarre behavior in the days before he died...
He says John Wheeler got into his cab at the Amtrak station around 9:00 the morning of December 29th.
It was a cold day and Wheeler was wearing just a sportcoat and an open collared white shirt. He wanted to go the Hotel du Pont.
"'You can take me to the Hotel du Pont, but I'm not staying there because it's not worth the money' and he had me drop him off at 11th and Orange," Spence said.
And that's where Spence last saw him, looking lost, just standing on the corner.
"He was just a lonely sort of guy. He just started walking," Spence said.
Spence says Wheeler was holding a small briefcase at the time....

The author must be disheveled and carrying one shoe by the way he’s writing...
Was Wheeler already confused in the cab or what?
Nope, according to the cabbie, he was "relaxed", "lucid", and "chatty".

That's what I mean. At the top of the article it's written, "And that's where Spence last saw him, looking lost, just standing on the corner. He was just a lonely sort of guy. He just started walking," Spence said."
I know what you’re saying, and I agree, the writer of the article did a lousy job. The real news in it, and the reason I posted it, is the briefcase.
It’s the first time any witness who has claimed to see Wheeler, has also said they saw him carrying a briefcase. All we knew before is that witnesses had claimed Wheeler told them he’d been robbed of his briefcase.
The entire Wheeler thing is just plain strange. IMO, it was a mob hit associated with his neighbor or a government cover up but somehow they’re going to claim it was a simple mugging and case closed.
That's 3 cabbies now but only one actually gave him a ride...Things that make you go hmmmmmmm.
