Toyota recalls 1.7 million vehicles as quality woes mount
Reuters ^ | 01/26/2011 | Chris Gallagher

Toyota Motor Corp said it would recall more than 1.7 million vehicles worldwide, bringing its total for recalls to nearly 16 million since late 2009 and dealing a blow to its efforts to restore its reputation for quality.

Although the situation is different from last year, when Toyota attracted intense scrutiny from U.S. safety regulators over unintended acceleration problems that were blamed for dozens of fatalities, the latest recall may make it harder for Toyota to convince investors it has put its quality problems behind it.

Shares of Toyota, the world's top automaker, extended early declines and closed down nearly 2 percent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange after the announcement.

Dream on, liberal, left-wing deadbeats!!! Toyota is number one across the world and will remain that way for a long time. The challenger, believe it or not, is not Honda, but Ford Motor Company.

My toyota has been a good vehicle, except for one thing that drives us bonkers.

The door handles keep breaking.

I’ve replaced them at least four times, and then just stopped. I now have five broken door handles, inside and out. It’s ridiculous.

True, but the media would just cover up the recalls of government motors trash.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

Toyota simply grew too big for its britches.

Sounds like my Suburban. The parts inside are all plastic and it doesn’t take much to wear them out.

I have a Sienna minivan, and have had the same exact issue. Expensive one too, since the quoted replacement price is something like $350 per.

Otherwise, I really like the Toyotas I've had. The minivan has almost 140k miles on it at 10 years and is currently under recall for a corrosion-prone spare tire attachment cable (not a major issue) - but apart from needing a new alternator at around 95k (we also voluntarily replaced the waterpump when the timing belt needed to be replaced) it's needed nothing but scheduled maintenance and expected upkeep (tires and brakes). The Highlander we have is really running like a champ, but only has 50k on the odo.

Ye, I am always a skeptic. Is Toyota being subjected to greater scrutiny than other auto producers - like maybe Government Motors? Not to say there aren't things to find wrong. Just saying, if you subject GM cars to the same scrutiny, would there be just as many problems?

It is a great way to crush the competition!

Over 2 years on my Toyota Matrix AWD and I’ve had to replace all 3 windshield wipers. Piece o’ crap car.

150K on my 2004 4Runner and only real expense was changing the timing belt at 120K.

Other than tires and oil changes (and of course, gas) this SUV has been practically cost free.

Love my Toyotas!

OE blades are only expected to last a year. Try Trico Flex or Shield beam blades. Or try Bosch.

OTOH, gubbamint owner motahs is protected from such scrutiny as would result in a recall, and has all of the power of the media to taint it’s “enemies”...and they don’t like Toyota, since their high quality standards amount to “accountability”, which is anathema to union/gubbamint scumbags.

ILoveMy4Runner Bump :)

My 4Runner is the 4th Toyota we have had the pleasure to have owned. Could not have wished for a better vehicle to ride out this bad economy in.

Apparently the consumers feel differently; Toyota beat the UAW cars well, and will continue to do so. I don’t have to worry if my car is a “Monday car” or a “Friday car”.

Having owned a UAW car in the past, I must say there is no comparison in dealership relations with Toyota; any work
I needed done on the American car (under warranty) was treated as though I was inconveniencing the dealership, while the Toyota dealership hangs their head as though it was their personal failure that the car had even a minor problem...

: )

I swear by my Toyota Prius. My 1996 Ford Explorer keeps on chugging along at 225k. And our 205 Toyota Tundra is a reliable workhorse.

Three letters prevented me from buying a Ford Focus instead of the Prius...UAW.

Don't buy a Toy-ota, buy a real car instead!

But what car to buy?

I'm Swedish, so therefore I guess it's hardly surprising I personally would recommend a Volvo.

Naturally, I'm biased, even more so as I live in Gothenburg (home of Volvo) and have worked at the assembly line at the main Torslanda plant. But regardless, Volvos are some of the safest, most comfortable and most reliable cars on Earth.

Audis, Beamers and MBs are great too, but Volvos in fact last even longer than an average Mercedes does and for some reason the Bavarians never seem to get the ergonomics right. Volvos and SAABs simply are much more comfortable means of transportation.

I've driven my V70 all the way from Sweden down to France without taking a stop (other than “bathroom breaks” and stopping for gas), when I left the vehicle it was like “Hey, did I just drive 1000 miles?”.

Have the same year and model. Great vehicle. At 100k now and haven’t had a problem with it yet!

I’m not saying you’re not right, but this seems to be a voluntary recall by Toyota.
