Military brass do not applaud Obama’s mention of DADT repeal during SOTU

The military brass in attendance didn’t stand, cheer, applaud or even break a smile when President Barack Obama lauded the December repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in his State of the Union speech Tuesday night.

Air Force General Norton Schwartz and Marine Corps General James Amos looked like statues after the president played up the congressional repeal of the military policy.

“Our troops come from every corner of this country – they are black, white, Latino, Asian and Native American,” Obama said. “They are Christian and Hindu, Jewish and Muslim. And, yes, we know that some of them are gay. Starting this year, no American will be forbidden from serving the country they love because of who they love.”

U.S. Navy Admiral Gary Roughhead, Army General George Casey and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Michael Mullen, who publicly supported repeal of DADT, didn’t give Obama any positive reaction either.

The Joint Chiefs have in the past stood and applauded certain policies during State of the Union addresses.

I noticed that, and several of the people I was with remarked on it.

The link leads to a 404 error, though. Flushed down the memory hole?

So is Barry Dunham going to use UCMJ Article 88 to kick them out?

In another country, people got sent to the GULAG under Article 58 for not applauding Comrade Stalin to the point of exhaustion.

As I recall the military members in attendance never applaud political aspects of the speech.

Well.... Article 88 UCMJ prohibits “contempt toward elected officials” by commissioned officers. I first heard it about when I came back into the Army Reserve after a break in service, and was warned by my commander to restrain my anti-Clinton remarks while on duty.

Simply refusing to stand and applaud the POTUS wouldn’t fill the bill, IMO.

BTW, Article 88 was published in 1867 (not 1993 as some believe) and was intended to prevent Union generals with presidential ambitions from criticizing the incumbent President, who at the time was the unfortunate Andrew Johnson.

What you describe is a rational interpretation, however, with this Regime a more “fast and loose” interpretation would not surprise me.

Interesting that he lumps the “gays” in with the people of different faiths.

Recognizing that they are unable to express their contempt for one so ably UNFIT to lead. I will be their voice. Obama is the man who NEVER should have been elected-Should never have been allowed to take Office— WHO should NEVER have seen his agenda passed. He is A LIAR,and a Deceiver, and a Fraud—and when America cared about the Office of the President -one like him would have been IMPEACHED for proposing such immoral acts -then taken out and tarred and feathered-and run out of town on a rail for deceiving the people.

It hasn’t stopped Obama from being President either.

If you didn’t notie, the chiefs did not stand other than at obviously non-political comments, like thanking our troops for the heavy lifting hey do, etc.

It is protocol for the military in uniform/on “duty” to not acknowledge politics period. We are all appointed to office by the POTUS (confirmed by the congress) or via authority (in the case of enlisted) by officers so empowered.

Best;

The military should put all the queers in the same unit, send them to the fiercest fighting, repeat as necessary.

I noticed that too. Clearly a politically motivation decision that detracts from the efficiency and effectivity of the military body. The CiC just made their jobs a whole lot more difficult and expensive. No wonder they are not pleased. As a tax payer, knowing I'll have to fund these social changes to the military, I'm not happy either.

The Ft. Hood massacre reminded us that there are muzzies in our military. But I shouldn’t jump to conclusions.

The fascinating thing about all of this is that Admiral Mullen and Admiral Roughead were the biggest advocates of foisting open homosexuality into the military.

Then we have Captain Honors or whatever the hell his name was masturbating on a camera and broadcasting his show throughout an entire aircraft carrier.

I swear, if I meet anyone who defends the behavior of today's Navy officers, I will gladly remind them of just how disgusted most people are with this behavior.

At least the hierarchy in the Army, Marines and Air Force publicly announced that they were against a repeal of DODT. General Amos and General Casey were totally against it, and the USAF brass said that now is a totally inappropriate time for it given the wars and other stress factors.

I am in strong agreement with you. However, I am also amazed at the many persons, particularly young people of voting age, who see Obama as a true patriot with kindest regards for the people. They don’t seem to see his tongue-in-cheek lies.
