(CNN) -- After the Academy Awards ceremony in 2010, there was a great deal of hope that the glass ceiling had finally been shattered in Hollywood.
"The Kathryn Bigelow" effect was coined by some industry observers who believed that her win for "The Hurt Locker," the first Oscar for a woman director, would open doors of opportunity for females behind the camera. The riveting film "Precious" yielded a best supporting actress win for African-American performer Mo'Nique, and the first ever statuette for an African-American screenwriter in the best adapted screenplay category went to Geoffrey Fletcher.
But that was last year.
This year there was a decided dearth of diversity in the Oscar nominations. There are no women or people of color among the director nominees, and the acting nominees are all white. Javier Bardem, who is up for best actor for his role in "Biutiful,' is a Spaniard and therefore European.
Which begs the question: Why in an era of ever increasing diversity among movie audiences is that not being reflected among the nominees for Hollywood's most prestigious award? Where are the diverse faces both in front of and behind the cameras?

You know, you're right! And furthermore, why are they limiting the awards to such outdated concepts as the male and female gender role? What about the performers who are confused about their gender, the transgender folks, the ... well, you get the idea.
Denzel Washington is one of my favorite actors, yeah! applause.
Lilly-white weirdos is more descriptive.
More attempts at affirmative action results.
They could force the Rooney Rule into Hollywood. Every Producer must interview one minority for director and every director one minority for lead roles.
They need to establish Quota’s and lower the Standards. It works for Government and Pepco..
“The Hurt Locker” was universally panned by vets back from the sandbox. The main character was an adrenaline junkie who was only good at getting his men killed. The fact that the movie didn’t portray our guys as pure evil made it noteworthy.
Unless you’re talking about aggressive marketing, nope.
They can’t focus on one Glorified Group at a time, like crows with their shiny objects. This year it’s all about the Holy Gay.
How BRILLIANT is the movie “The Kids Are Alright (sic)”? OMGosh, a GAY COUPLE!!! Of course it has to generate Oscars! How Important and Meaningful.
Watching the Golden Globes speeches, it was patently apparent that Gay trumps Straight. How stupid are liberals to NEVER give any group equality but always to WORSHIP the discriminated group for its own sake, placing it above all others, all to show how BENEVOLENT and COMPASSIONATE they are.
I live here and Hollywood still makes me sick.
Did you see True Grit?
“Gays to the rescue”...Award enough homosexuals and that will cover the perceived racism. Gay trumps race these days. Problem solved!
I did not see the current release of True Grit, but last month watched the original again on the Dish.
