The Media's Sarah Palin Obsession - by the Numbers ['Breathtaking']
Associated Content ^ | January 26, 2011 | Mark Whittington

Posted on 01/26/2011 2:54:32 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

The pledge by the Washington Post's Dana Milbank to ignore Sarah Palin for the month of February has caused the Hollywood Reporter to run the numbers on the former Alaska governor on her mentions in the media.

The results are, mildly speaking, breathtaking. That is especially true considering that Palin holds no elected or appointed office and has not yet announced to run for any.

Not surprisingly, MSNBC, the liberal alternative network, turns out to be most obsessed with Palin, even exceeding Fox News, for which Palin works as a news analyst.

Keith Olbermann has mentioned Palin on 320 segments of his new defunct "Countdown" program. He is beaten by Chris Matthews, who has talked about Sarah Palin on "Hardball."

Fox and CNN mention Sarah Palin only slightly less than MSNBC. With the exception of President Obama, Sarah Palin was the number one newsmaker of 2010.

How does a part-term_governor and_a failed vice-presidential candidate become the subject of such scorn and adoration in the media? Palin, at times, seems to have become the alternate President of the United States, her every word hung upon as if they came from the Oval Office and not from a home office in Wasilla, Alaska.

The theory seems to be that the coverage of Sarah Palin is driven by MSNBC and that network's pathological hatred of the woman. According to the Hollywood Reporter:

"So basically, the 24-hour news cycle on any given week might go like this: Olbermann attacks Palin. Fox then attacks Olbermann for attacking Palin. Olbermann counterattacks by calling either Palin or Rupert Murdoch the 'worst person in the world.' And so on."

But then, what is the source of the hatred? If Sarah Palin were really stupid, or crazy, or diabolical as her detractors suggest, she would have become marginalized long ago....

She is an existential threat to everything the left holds dear. In their nightmares, liberals see Sarah Palin raising her hand, saying, "I solemnly swear—" as Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George H. W. Bush look on. Obama has a scowl on his face. Clinton has a barely disguised leer. Father and son Bush glance at one another with be awe and amusement.

Nice writing, but she left one out of her list, and he will be watching with pride:

She is a relatively young, telegenic, articulate purveyor of conservative thoughts and values with a large following. She is the one person in America, aside from Barack Obama, whose name is mentioned in the same sentence as "President of the United States."

Works for me.

The reason they pick on her so much is that they know she has been campaigning close to two years already.

Once you enter the race, you are fair game.

That is why the others have waited and stayed out of the limelight. Two less years of being savaged is a plus.

The MSM is actually holding back. They have damned her with faint praise.

Seriously, it will not surprise me if she chooses to NOT run for president, as frankly, she's already in a remarkable position of power & influence, right where she is right now. She may decide to consolidate and grow that power & influence, it wouldn't surprise me.

In either case, I am glad that she has become an active voice in our national debate. And I'm also glad she isn't afraid of anybody, not even screwball Chris Matthews, who seems to have a peculiar crush on her and has had her on his show very frequently.

For me, I think, her most distinguishing characteristic and charming feature is that RINOS must loathe her and can't express one molecule of it to such a gracious poised intelligent lady.

LOL

Your post doesn't make sense on any level.

For one thing, she is no more running than Romney or Guiliani. In other words, none are declared and none have made any announcements. She isn't an official candidate simply because you have announced her as such.

She has a very limited run weekly show, unlike Huckabee's regularly scheduled television show. And Romney would love to be on television everyday, but it would only hurt his likeability.

I don't know if she's running or not, but it is not her fault that the media is obsessed with her. It's sort of pathological, really.

Some budding young research psychologist should look into the theory the media are acting out their feelings of guilt for pushing the weaker and harmful obama over the much more experienced, capable and likable Palin.

The only way they can ease their guilt now is by attacking her and making her look bad. Thing is, she won't cooperate and be defeated and humbled like any garden variety republican they're used to would be, which makes them try even harder.

It's a vicious cycle. They know, at some cognitive dissonant level, that by attacking Palin, they've become what they hate, but they can't stop themselves.

They knew it the first time they saw her.

It's why they go insane every time they think of her.

I have to apologize for my reply, I thought that you and I were on a Rep.Bachmann thread, so my reply to you makes NO sense here. I asked a mod to delete it as it was in the wrong thread but they didn't.

It will not surprise me if Governor Palin chooses to not run for president in 2012, but at the same time it would not shock me if she tossed her hat in the ring. I think, however, that she is enormously enjoying her present life, particularly all her media exposure.

I doubt that she is enjoying the media exposure. Hearing the sexual jokes about her underage daughter, that her older daughter is the worst person in the world, the comments that she should have aborted her son, silly stories that her husband cheated on one of the most beautiful women alive with one of the ugliest prostitutes in history (one who only makes it in that profession because of the very long, dark nights), and that no matter what she says or does it was wrong has got to be tiring. I imagine she gets a whole lot more pleasure from the results of her political involvement than from the all-Palin mainstream media hatred.

THAT obscene crap is NOT what I was referring to, and HOW could any freeper imagine that I was?

I was referring, of course, to her fabulously successful series about Alaska on The Learning Channel and about her frequent commentary on FOX News.

If you don't think that she enjoys her life presently, then you and I have entirely different views of both humanity and of finances.

A friend of mine told me that his girlfriend blamed Palin for the shootings in AZ.

He asked her where she heard that theory. She said her Mother told her. My friend straighted out the little woman and told her to stop listening to her Mother.

Liberals don't even bother to learn facts. All the information they spew is nothing but second hand Gossip.

I know people enough to agree that she enjoys her life presently, as she has probably enjoyed almost every day of her entire life. However, I suspect that I know more about finances at her current level than anyone who thinks she did the Alaska show for money. For many people, including myself and I suspect including her, there is no difference between two million dollars and twenty million or even two hundred million dollars. Once you are past a certain level (and I am past that level also), the extra money is irrelevant. I am firmly convinced that Sarah Palin did the series to reach a larger audience, people who had seen a one-sided caricature of her and would discount her political commentary because of the biased coverage, and not for money. By doing a non-political series, she introduced herself as a real person to those voters and made her campaign endorsements more meaningful.

Governor Palin wants to leave a free country to her children and grandchildren, and her actions make complete sense by that standard. Similarly, whether she runs in 2012 or not will be determined by whether there is a better candidate who shares American values and can win. I don't think she wants the money or the power of that office, which means she would run for the best possible reason, for the good of our country.

Opinions are just opinions, that's all; and I have NO problem with my strong opinion that I believe Governor Palin to be as pragmatic & practical & cautious & frugal in her monetary matters as I believe that she is in her conservatism.

So it's an opinion based upon my strong feeling, and frankly, I seriously do not believe that adults with more than two children ever feel entirely financially secure, no matter if they are multi-millionaires.

Perhaps billionaires DO, but that's way above my pay grade.

I wonder if maybe you think that I think that earning "lots" of money is wrong???? NO, I don't think that; however, I empathize with the rich whom I personally know ... who do NOT feel financially secure, any more than people of lesser incomes feel secure.... the times are simply too strange, it "feels" like all manner of possible global financial catastrophes could possibly strike.

I presume that any mother of FIVE children and who knows how many grandchildren over the next decade will NEVER be awe-struck by wealth, but at the same time will be extremely cautious & conservative about same.

I believe that she has an extraordinary amount of political power in her current speechmaker and commentator status, and it is POSSIBLE that she happens to agree with me, and in any event I don't have to present FACTs or STATISTICs for ANY of my opinions.

Hmmmmmm....

I do not know if Governor Palin will decide to run for president, but I do know that her staunch supporters have been campaigning for her to do so, for over 2 years.

Unlike Palin.... I do believe that Mitt Romney is running for president and that it is OBVIOUS that he has been campaigning for over 2 years; in the same vein, it is OBVIOUS to me that Governor Tim Pawlenty has been campaigning for the 2012 race for over 2 years.

What EVIDENCE do I have --- I don't need to present evidence; these are my feelings, my opinions, my observations, how I interpret the actions of Pawlenty and Romney.

On the other hand, I have NO idea whether Rep. Michele Bachmann will enter the race and I have NO idea what Governor Sarah Palin will decide.

UNLIKE the RINOS ... both Bachmann & Palin have STRONG political power in the positions they currently hold; both are extremely politically influencial, unlike Mittens & Timmy.

Personally speaking, I believe that the 2012 campaign will be INFINITELY more interesting if both of these women toss their bonnets into the ring, LOL.... they will drive Mr. Chrissey Bo-Tingles Matthews mad and these articulate women will raise the political discourse to levels far above what happened last time around when.... and maybe, just maybe, Mega McCain will cease to have any relevancy as a vain silly immature insipid juvenile "commentator."

Excellent question. I sometimes think some folks would have private elections in an altar room and never leave to go vote IRL.
I’ve actually seen cat fights on here bashing Bachmann because the tea party ‘used’ Palin.

To resemble the Oval Office at the Whitehouse.
