Why is she preaching this to military families/members? These are probably the most fitness-conscious people in the country.
The place she truly needs to hit up is the hospitals. As a nurse, I’ve seen 300-600 lb patients on restricted diets whose family members would smuggle in large bags of Mcdonalds, boxes of fried chicken, etc. to them because they just “couldn’t survive” on the 1800 cal/day hospital diets. THESE are the real offenders who are already being hospitalized for their obesity-related cormorbidities.

There's no easy way around what you describe. Nurses certainly don't have the time or probably the right to inspect the "care" packages visiting relatives bring in. But a thought occurred to me, maybe say to the patient something along the lines of "Do you have a life insurance policy? I wonder, aren't those nice relatives bringing you your treats the beneficiaries? I mean, sweetheart, it's the perfect crime!"
