A Victory for Democracy
Chicago Sun Times ^ | January 28, 2011 | Editors

To exclude Emanuel, to throw him off the ballot because he had the temerity to go to Washington to serve the president, would have been an outrage against this inclusive spirit of democracy. And, according to Thursday’s slap-down of the state Appellate Court’s Monday ruling, it would have tossed out 150 years of settled residency law.

We have defended Emanuel’s right to be on the ballot in two earlier editorials, leading some to question whether we would have so forcefully run to the defense of a less prominent candidate.

In truth, probably not, though the same legal and common-sense arguments would apply.

We once were proud to be a nation of laws.

In general the nation subscribed to the belief that laws should be observed; that there were (and are) mechanisms to seek changes or to abolish those laws that we didn’t like or agree with.

Now the media, government officials (ie: AG Holder), and other authority figures tell us (and show us) that laws apply only to main street Americans. They do not apply to well connected individuals and politically favored groups.

Oh, gag! Much as I don’t like Carol Mosley Braun, I hope she beats Rahm handily. Either way, Chicago will get the Mayor the city deserves. ;o)

A big question should be why Chicago, a steadfastly Democrat machine city, can’t seem to come up with any serious candidates for mayor?

Didn’t Daley have *any* competent lieutenants? Aren’t there any Bloomberg-like billionaires who want to be “the man”? High level party functionaries?

Heck, it seems that the only people running for mayor are hardly what you would consider worthy. Emmanuel is like a mob Consigliere, but just not “boss” material. The rest are just fools.

In the absence of any other information, I would guess that Chicago is about to collapse, and nobody wants to captain a sinking ship. Which could well be the case with Illinois and Chicago running out of money.

But even then, there is usually *somebody* optimistic enough to think they can somehow pull a win, enough to create their own dynasty.

But not this time.

Rahm and Barack have definitely played the objection game with their opponents. They simply hate to have the same laws applied to their candidacies.

Hollywood, California seems to be funding Emanuel’s campaign. Movie producers seem to be his biggest contributors.

Oddly enough, for someone being criticized for being constantly out of town and out of touch, Emanuel spent the holidays in Los Angeles (Thanksgiving) and Thailand (New Year’s). His wife and children never even bothered to accompany him back to Chicago in September. Reportedly, they will not move back until after the election is over, sometime next summer after school ends.

We are now a nation of lawyers and completely lawless. The Law is what ever you can get a judge to rule.

Right. Barack Obama used Illinois election laws to get his state senate opponent disqualified. No complaints from press; rule of law you know, written for a reason, apply to everyone, etc. And now?

Nice prevarication! The question IS NOT whether you would forcefully defend "a less prominent candidate" but if you would even open your big mouth in defense of a conservative candidate instead of the mobster-rahmbo???

Democracy, yes, that’s when 15 people agree they can hang one person who dissents...right. Dems always call us a democracy because they don’t want a representative republic.

It's shiite like this that keeps the media on its downward slide. I will be pulling for rahmbo to win so we can watch him suffer from some of the policies he put in place. :-)
