A reporter and a cameraman for ABC7 TV were assaulted and robbed Thursday evening in East Oakland while reporting about efforts to find new homes for a pack of severely abused pit-bull dogs.

The two men had finished interviewing neighbors in the 600 block of Capistrano Drive, near where officers found the abused and neglected animals in December, about 7:10 p.m. when two men approached them. One forced the reporter, Tomas Roman, to the ground at gunpoint and threatened his life. The other armed man confronted the cameraman, Stan Wong, and beat him with a gun.

These are the consequences when you have liberals who are soft on crime and criminals in control in California.

Totally dumb thing to do after dark.

What next? Finding yourself in the middle of Watts, at midnight and asking for directions to Long Beach?

Weird, I know I have seen Tomas Roman before but can’t find his picture.

Hope he and the camera man are okay

First mistake, Never go to East Oakland in the Evening.

Who remembers an incident in Chicago, in I guess the mid-80's, when a family from Wyoming parked their camper on the street near Cabrini Green, and were assaulted? I think one or more of them were killed, but I'm not sure. I remember being amazed at how this was brushed off with the attitude, "What do you expect?" It was barely news. People laughed about it.

Driving back from the Long Beach arena, back around 1995 or so, I missed the 405(?) exit back to my hotel in Torrance. Wound up north of there somewhere. Stopped at a red light with next to nobody around but a few characters. Decided waiting for the light was not such a good idea; made sure it was clear both ways and *cough* proceeded on my way. Only time I’ve ever done something like that.

“Never go to East Oakland in the Evening.”

Or West Oakland, for that matter. Or downtown.

Jack London Square might be OK.

Oakland used to be a beautiful city pre-war, until Henry Kaiser imported rural, uneducated workers from the deep South to work the shipyards. When the war ended, the jobs did, too. Generations of welfare recipients have taken over Oakland, and turned it into the cesspool it is today. Ugh.

Oakland is bad enough. One can only imagine how bad EAST Oakland is. Sort of like EAST Detroit or EAST Cleveland. EAST St. Louis is one of the worst of the worst, so I’m told.

People of certain pigmentations are best advised to stay in the car, lock the doors and run any stop lights. And NO tv cameras. That only encourages them.

Memphis CRIME REPORT: TV photographer assaulted, robbed in Midtown

Jan 26, 2011

A cameraman for WHBQ-TV Channel 13 was assaulted and robbed near Midtown while filming a story this afternoon, police said.

Photographer Mike Moore and reporter Lauren Johnson were filming near Poplar and Cleveland, police said. They were in the parking lot of a BP gas station, interviewing teenagers about teen pregnancy, when some in the group jumped Moore, police said.

Someone stole Moore’s phone and damaged the camera, police said, but Moore was not seriously hurt. Johnson was not assaulted, police said.

Google.maps view of the area of the incident doesn’t show a squalid, bombed-out neighborhood in the physical sense. It’s all about the people who live there.

Oakland, CA has some very nice neighborhoods, but (obviously) that’s not one of them.

Oakland is tough. Jerry Brown used it for profit and made it worse. Parking meters are everywhere and few get used. The Black Panthers (Bobby Seal and crew) became politicians in the 60’s and created racial tensions. The city gets few property taxes now. TBerkeley students who volunteer in Oakland schools see criminal behavior and stop volunteering. The news guys should have known better. The flat part of Oakland is to be avoided.

Where was I? LOL, north of Long Beach, missed the 405, went up some main hiway from Long Beach Arena. Must have been 5 minutes or 10 minutes past the 405.

I have no idea if it was still Long Beach. But it was not a good area, wherever I was. Yikes.

Reminds me of Phoenix. Went there about the same time and stayed in Tempe (I ... think). Anyways, not a few blocks off the hotel and I was not in a good area it seemed. Just over a short 4-lane bridge. Might have been at a small Marriott.

One of my daughters lived in Oakland for several years, commuting to her job in Emeryville five minutes away through those unsafe streets. I always told her, if anyone approaches your car then floor the gas pedal, doesn't matter if it's a red light, just get the hell away. A legislator got car-jacked at one of the intersections that she stopped at daily. She moved to Kansas, and I was happy she got out of Oakland alive.

If you'd just stayed on it (whichever of the two freeways north out of Long Beach you were on), you could have jumped off onto I-105, or I-5/I-10 which would have taken you to Santa Monica. The 105 would have taken you to LAX. No need to get off at all.

Looking at this map, I must have gone up the 710 and then exited after missing the 405. And found myself down in those urban areas, trying to head west towards Torrance. I think I eventually found my way back to the 405.

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=long+beach+arena&fb=1&gl=us&hq=long+beach+arena&cid=0,0,8774118281407410212&ei=MfdDTcOSG8P78Aa1rqTBDQ&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=image&resnum=2&sqi=2&ved=0CC0QnwIwAQ

My hotel was right next to the 405 (south side) in Torrance.

Definitely got a little bit lost that night.

Bobby Seal and crew (Huey Newton Eldridge Cleaver).

When I worked through that area in the 70’s and 80’s, the tensions were palpable. Perhaps prior to WW2 it was a nice city, too long ago for me to know but from my experience there, it is the Newark of the West.

They’re all in socialist (therefore bankrupt) states as well; too many years subsidizing out-of-control breeding and the freebies that come with it, resulting in businesses and taxpayers fleeing. Without drastic measures all 3 states will be left with the permanent underclass, illegal aliens, and the government functionaries required to operate the giant shelters they’ve become (public school teachers, emergency personnel, and social workers).
