Ancient Treasures Looted, Destroyed in Egypt's Chaos (Zahi Hawass interview)

Archaeologist Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, reports that several of the country's museums have been attacked by looters taking advantage of the political turmoil in the country.

In the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, looters stole jewelry from the museum shop and smashed a statue of Tutankhamun and other artifacts. In a Sinai store containing antiquities from the Port Said Museum, "a large group, armed with guns and a truck, entered the store, opened the boxes in the magazine and took the precious objects. Other groups attempted to enter the Coptic Museum, Royal Jewellery Museum, National Museum of Alexandria, and El Manial Museum," Hawass, who is also a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, posted on his website.

"My heart is broken and my blood is boiling. I feel that everything I have done in the last nine years has been destroyed in one day," Hawass wrote.

I remember hearing about the destruction of the magnificent statues in Afghanistan and it made me puke. Sooner or later they’ll start destroying France more aggresively and then the French may end up ironically leading the charge.

That’s all well and good and if this was to obtain true freedom/liberty, then it wouldn’t be of concern but it would appear that the barbarians have hijacked the movement. They could end up like Iran or worse (if that’s even possible). The criminals are being set free in droves as well. What kind of prisoners are they? criminal action or political? In any case, it sounds like the muslims/islamic fascists are attempting to co-opt this; that is very bad news. According to the Drudge Report this evening, the anger is beginning to be directed at us and Israel (of course). We know who is behind that.

Time honored muslim cultural tradition, is all. Whatever they destroy in Egypt during the coming days, is like nothing to what they destroyed when Islam first swept across North African, Persia, and the Middle East.

What we have left today are only the dregs they missed the first time around, or were discovered later and kept for tourist revenue.

The coming Umma has no use for the past, only the road to gaining universal access to Paradise matters to them.

If it wasn't for the British, Egypt wouldn't have any antiquities left. They would have all been looted from the tombs and sold at the flea markets. It was the Brits who put them in museums and gave them value to begin with. Stupid Egyptians!

I believe one of the moslem rulers of Egypt tried to destroy the pyramids centuries ago. they gave up after removing some of the blocks.

I wonder why the civilized nations allow such truly important world treasures, such as King Tut’s treasures to remain in such unstable countries like ALL the moslem ones.

They would be much safer in America, Britain, or other European countries, until they are taken over by the moslem mobs.

Years ago, there was a thread on FR about how the Great Library at Alexandria was destroyed. While blamed on Christians, this thread showed it was actually the moslems who destroyed the Library’s book collections.
