Nanotubes protect brain tissue from stroke damage
Chemistry World ^ | 30 January 2011 | Simon Hadlington

Researchers in Korea and the US have shown that modified carbon nanotubes can protect brain tissue from the damage caused by ischaemic stroke, where the blood supply to the brain is interrupted. The work could lead to new treatments to help the brain repair itself after this type of stroke.

Sung Su Kim, of Chung Ang University in Seoul, and colleagues treated commercially available carboxylated nanotubes with a nitrogen and hydrogen plasma, resulting in positively-charged amine groups on the surface of the nanotubes. These amine-modified nanotubes were then injected in the brains of rats. A week later ischaemic stroke was artificially induced in the rats by surgery. The team showed that rats treated with the nanotubes were able to balance on a rotating rod more efficiently than those that had not had the treatment, and that under the microscope there was less brain damage in the treated animals.

Precisely how the nanotubes protect the brain tissue is not yet clear, Kim says. 'This should be elucidated by further study. We hypothesise that positive charged effect and high surface energy by amine-modifying provide a favourable environment for neurons, followed by enhanced tolerance of neurons against environmental stress.'

Levels of a protein involved in cell adhesion remained higher in the treated brain tissue, suggesting that the nanotubes could stabilise this protein. There is also less inflammation.

Maurizio Prato of the University of Trieste in Italy has researched the interaction of functionalised carbon nanotubes with nerve cells. He says that the work is 'impressive' and demonstrates the 'enormous potential of carbon nanotubes in nervous system applications.' Prato adds, 'A very important issue will be on what the   results will be once the stroke has occurred and the nanotubes are administered following stroke.'

Kim says that a key issue in applying the nanotubes after a stroke will be to ensure that no further brain damage in caused, and that his group is looking into new formulations and treatment methods for such an approach.

I know a 29-year-old woman that had one of those strokes. Saw the name and linked it to her on Facebook.

lots of research... lack of facts.
Who decided what the ....”plus....es” of carbon nano tubes are?
Where is the “science”?
NOVA on PBS is running a series on Monday nights right and their very lib scientists admit that they are not sure that these carbon nanotubes do not penetrate the blood/brain barrier and what would happen if they did.

This is like Global Warming Redux... let’s all bet on the “science” for Greed’s
Sake, make a bundle, and get out when the getting is good.

If God did not intend it to go in your body. don’t do it.

It’s not as if all of these “Scientist’s” have not been bought off before.
Pay for the Outcome.. You will eventually get the outcome.

It’s all about greed, funny how those two bit lawamker’s (i.e. Congress)
Go in as poor as church mice and come out like Big Fat Cats!

Oh, Yeah, I’ll keep believing their crap... “We are from the Government and We are here to help!”

My husband had a stroke at age 50 ,two years ago. It left him with several disabilities.I pray there is something that could help him.

This stuff will probably be invaluable to a stroke sufferer, but it’s still reminds me too much of the Borg. I could see this being misused bigtime.

As with many other maladies, the best cure for strokes is prevention. This involves a healthy diet, regular exercise and minimal sodium and caffeine intake, all from an early age.

Of course, this cannot be achieved with a typical North American diet and lifestyle. You will need to chart your own course.

It apparently did penetrate the blood/brain barrier and they suffered less disability.

"Amine-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes protect neurons from injury in a rat stroke model"

That's the title of the original article. The abstract is linked in comment# 1. Why don't you read it? Carbon is linked to nitrogen in all your amino acids and proteins.

This is like Global Warming Redux...

Please, as if all science is corrupt.

Although nobody would realize I had a stroke by looking at me I have not felt good since. I had minimal damage (4 millimeter x 6 millimeter damage to my brain) but it has drastically affected my energy and pain levels.

Very interesting. My dad had a severely clogged artery that produced TIA’s . He had rotorooter surgery to clear them. Years later he had tests that showed the vessels were clogged further up, too much in his head to permit surgery. The Doctor said he didn’t know how he was making it. Somehow the blood was seeping up

The nanotubes would allow passage and flow I guess

Somehow the blood was seeping up.

They developed a collateral circulation. Do a search on "collateral circulation"

Mocking what you don’t understand is rather unbecoming. Getting published in Nature Nanotechnology is begging for being reproduced.
