Rather warns media is in 'state of crisis'
San Antonio Express News ^ | 4 February 2011 | Jeanie Jakle

Posted on 02/04/2011 7:52:33 AM PST by Racehorse

Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather was both funny and passionate when he addressed a packed house Thursday night at San Antonio College.

Sounding a little choked up, he encouraged the audience of students and others to follow their dream, whatever that may be, because “by doing your heart's bidding, you can find a way to burn with the white hot flame that can make the difference between having a job and having a career, a life's work filled with joy and meaning.”

However, his clearest message was a warning.

Rather said that when it comes to the media, this country is “in a state of crisis.”

“Those who dumb down the news, trivialize the news with in-studio shouting matches passing for debate,” Rather said, “those who tart up the news with celebrity gossip, scandal and sensationalism are playing right into the hands of those that stand to gain the most from the news being seen as irrelevant and trivial and no more or less worth your attention than the next episode of ‘American Idol.'”

He elaborated: “I worry that if it becomes no more than a reality show, something that could be scripted and rigged behind the scenes without anyone really getting upset about it, that our freedom of the press will become another one of those constitutionally granted rights that can be watered down and eventually taken away from us.”

Rather has a lot of chutzpah here.

He is the one who got on tv and presented phony documents in order to scandalize and sensationalize the 2004 campaign over an old issue.

Has he recanted from that, and does he think he should have instead stuck to the issues in 04?

Dan brought a creativity to the news that surpassed almost anything seen today.

"retired as CBS anchor in 2005"

It's more like "resigned in disgrace".

A man who did as much as anyone to trivialize the news, by falsifying information, worries about said trivialization?!

You just can’t make this stuff up. I swear, I’m sure I’m living in bizzaro world.

It was far more serious than that - - Rather actually tried to fix a presidential election on behalf of his party's candidate.

Funny how he’s so darn concerned about psuedo-news and sensationalism in others when he’s busying himself predicting the death of the Constistution and the collapse of the Republic.

“Those who dumb down the news, trivialize the news with in-studio shouting matches passing for debate...

Yeah, right. The 'good ole days' for Rather were the bad old days for the rest of us.

Rather wants the past back - when it was soooooooo much easier - only liberals got to talk - unopposed - no debate whatsoever. And the rest of us? We got to nod in great appreciation while liberal windbags pontificated and lectured ...

Rather's an idiot if he thinks it's EVER going to go back to that...

I was thinking the exact same thing. Why can't they simply leave the stage?
