Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child From Attacker

The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her “guardian angel.”

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as “Angela,” was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn’t have to do either to protect herself and her child — a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

“I don’t think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman,” Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.

BIL had a pit-lab....they’re great dogs but owww, my shins. Tail would clear a table wagging and tended to leave anyone in range with black and blue shins.

AFAIK, Chet_99 is no longer welcome on FR. JimRob one day had had enough, and that was that.

Agreed. We adopted a rescue from our local Humane Society 3 years ago because our oldest, then 10, was absolutely petrified of all dogs, and we thought if we adopted one, she might generally improve, which she did, quite a bit. We ended up with a pit mix, very small, and not much pit in her (you can see it in her body shape and if you look straight at her face), but enough that the shelter made sure we lived in a town that allows them.

Anyway, she has the sweetest disposition I have ever seen in a dog. She has never snapped at our kids, never growled at a human with any sort of menace, loves our elderly cat, loves all people and loves other dogs even more. She’s very careful with hands etc during play and the only aggression we have ever seen was one snap at a larger dog at our local dog park last summer (it came at her from behind and above). I know she has defensive capabilities, she just hasn’t had need to express them, but I have no doubt that if she got a danger vibe from one of us, the person on the other end would be in serious hurt.

She’d be the perfect dog, if I could just break the burying instinct that rips holes in comforters and sheets...

>It is my opinion that a dog is ultimately only as good or bad as its owner.<

No question about it. Nice people have nice dogs.

I've noticed that with Trooper, too. You can hear him going through the house because his tail is hitting the wall like a baseball bat. Trooper

It is how you raise them, plus their natural temperament. Some dogs just have a bad temperament (much like people).

Where are all the other dog haters. There are almost always tons of pit haters spewing their BS.

There is a slight difference between Staffies and Pits, due to their coloring. Staffies can’t have pink noses. My pit has a pink “dudley” nose therefore she can’t be classified as a Staffie. Staffies are defined by strict coloring guidelines.

Old Bull might have been a pit bull or a mix. We had a dog that was dying and he howled Old Bull in to take his place for when he died. Old Bull was a good dog, but had lived independent for years before. We once had company, and Bull peed on my leg and I guess marked me as one of his pack. It really got away with me as I didn’t understand it at the time. I popped his butt a few times in front of the company. He later took off after putting up with the stuff around here for a while; we had female dogs who expected him to “be sensitive” to their sensibilities. He got fed up and I don’t blame him. I later saw him a ways up the road; he wasn’t mad at me, just wasn’t going to put up with us women. He was dear.

Pitbulls have been given a bad rap by too many chicken littles.

There are three different breeds -

American Staffordshire Terriers (Amstaff for short) - the AKC version of Pitbulls

Pitbulls - UKC

Staffies - abbreviation for English Staffordshire Terrier, recognized by AKC and UKC

Staffies are not pitbulls. They are smaller 30-35 pounds. They are the ones who cannot have a pink nose. In the UK they were known as the “Nanny dog.” But now they suffer from the same breed issues as pitbulls here.

Shelters in the US are 80% pitbull and pit mixes. Huge problem.

I take issue w/Lt. Jones calling the owners irresponsible. We had a canine Houdini. It took what seemed like ages to seal off his escape routes. Furthermore, I worked w/juvenile offenders who would release dogs (open the gate and come back later to burglarize), so it may not have been the responsibility of the owner.
The Creator put that dog in that place for a reason.
Thanks for the great story!
P.S. Once, we got in the car to attend a birthday party, and this gorgeous pit jumped into my lap, turned around and looked at me while grinning madly as if to say, “Hey! Party? Wow!”

Yeah, but it’s okay to taunt his ghost with positive pit bull stories. I was going to ping him myself because I thought his ghostly head might explode over this one.

I hope Angela gets her Angel.

“There are three different breeds”

Thanks for the info. I didn’t know American Staffordshire Terriers English Staffordshire Terriers were two distinct breeds.

The other night we watched Horatio's Drive: America's First Road Trip, a story about the first coast to coast cross country drive.

The driver was looking for a mascot, and he purchased Bud, described as a Bull dog .

Great story. Here's a link to a pic of Bud, goggles and all.

Unfortunately, there is more to the story.

Animal control has determined that the dog is blind and mistook the perp for the child.

rottndog, do you have any follow-up on this?

11johara28, do you have a link to this information? Or did you forget your "</sarc>" tag?
