A bald eagle was killed by a train Thursday morning while enjoying breakfast on a stretch of tracks near Abderdeen, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Craig Koppie, an eagle coordinator with the federal agency, said the rare encounter happened in a flash. The bird was eating a deer carcass about 8:30 a.m. as an Amtrak train headed to Washington approached. An engineer spotted the bird and blasted his horn, but the eagle took off too slowly and was hit.

Meanwhile, the Middle East burns and our economy still sucks. Thank you, Baltimore Sun (aka BS).
Gov’t run Amtrak kills the symbol of liberty — how appropriate!
All your eagles are belong to Willie Green.
Time to outlaw trains.
What a metaphor. Especially after Obama’s State of the Union where he mentioned building high-speed trains to make America great again.
The eagle has landed
All over the windshield
Trains should be outlawed to prevent death to protected species!
Call out the environmental grief counselors, pronto!
>>> ... but the eagle took off too slowly and was hit.
So, in other words, it is the bald eagle’s own fault.
Yes. It’s just past Harve De Grace.
Joe “Amtrak” Biden’s fault...
“Govt run Amtrak kills the symbol of liberty how appropriate!”
Symbol of liberty feeding on carrion ...
Give the feathers to the Indians, I bet the engineer didnt even make an effort to steer around the Eagle.
Will there be a fine or a waiver?
When trains are outlawed, only outlaws will have trains.
The psychotic mind of the liberal believes this kind of political symbol has influence on what happens in the real world.
Anyone get the ‘trains” side of the story? Good grief the hugh-man-ne-tee!
Would this be Obama’s version of Quetzalcoatl?
Bald Eagles are anything but endangered nowadays. We got em up the wazoo.
It’s Bush’s fault AND due to global warming.
Depends on who the engineer voted for last election.
The govt should look into putting eagle-whistles on trains.
I’m glad you have this figgered out—LOL!
Deer hardest hit?
DDT used to take these weak eagles out of the gene pool...
HEY, YOU’RE AN EAGLE! GO KILL THINGS!
If the train driver was a regular American and not a union goon dhim, he’d be facing years of harassment and fines from miscellaneous gov’t agencies.
Actually named for a place in Scotland. The location of Aberdeen Proving Grounds where the Army tests weapons and vehicles. The test area is sits on Chesapeake Bay and is a haven for all sorts of wildlife. I have often watched Bald Eagles out on the test ranges.
Yes. Its just past Harve De Grace.
Or, in this case, Coup de Grace...
So, at a salary of 120,000.00 per year, with benefits costing us - for his one position alone probably $150,000.00 per year - plus an office and office staff travel and per diem and field visits and power and heat and rent and a car and a research budget and a ... what else has this “eagle-eyed” expert done for our nation this year?
oh da manatee!
This is NOT a top story
Keep the trains but regulate their speed so the eagles will be safe, perhaps 4 MPH would be appropriate?
Quality reporting and proofing these days.
Wasn't De Grace a shortstop for the Orioles?
I thought nothing could get past ole Harve.
My wife and I were taking Amtrak to Chicago from San Fran one time. Our train hit a cow at about 4 in the morning. Did I mention the cow was dead and frozen solid?
When we debarked in Chicago it looked like the engine had hit a 900 pound mosquito. What a mess.
Maybe they have a F&WS “Incidental Take” permit?
Abderdeen sounds Arabic to you? No wonder you take offense to so many things so easily. Aberdeen is Gaelic.
Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act
The bald eagle will continue to be protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act even though it has been delisted under the Endangered Species Act. This law, originally passed in 1940, provides for the protection of the bald eagle and the golden eagle (as amended in 1962) by prohibiting the take, possession, sale, purchase, barter, offer to sell, purchase or barter, transport, export or import, of any bald or golden eagle, alive or dead, including any part, nest, or egg, unless allowed by permit Bald Eagle sitting in tree (16 U.S.C. 668(a); 50 CFR 22). "Take" includes pursue, shoot, shoot at, poison, wound, kill, capture, trap, collect, molest or disturb (16 U.S.C. 668c; 50 CFR 22.3). The 1972 amendments increased civil penalties for violating provisions of the Act to a maximum fine of $5,000 or one year imprisonment with $10,000 or not more than two years in prison for a second conviction. Felony convictions carry a maximum fine of $250,000 or two years of imprisonment. The fine doubles for an organization. Rewards are provided for information leading to arrest and conviction for violation of the Act.
Huh? Abderdeen just sounds like the reporter messed up when trying to spell Aberdeen (as in Aberdeen Scotland). But whatever.
Bald eagles may be majestic to look at, but no one ever said they were smart.
The eagle was not getting a nutritious lunch nor was he enrolled in Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” program.
Poor downtrodden, obsese eagle.
The bird shouldn’t of tried to fly while carrying the carrion. Like the one in AK that electrocuted itself in the power lines flying with a deer head. They obviously enjoy venison:)
Eagles are still getting run over by powerful forces trying to get their destination.
I thought this would end now that we’ve gotten rid of Sean McDermott...
