Bush cancels Switzerland visit under threat of protests, efforts to arrest him By Bridget Johnson - 02/05/11 09:59 AM ET

President George W. Bush has canceled an event in the famously neutral country Switzerland because of expected protests to his presence there.

Bush was supposed to give the keynote address at a Jewish group's charity gala on Feb. 12 in Geneva.

Leftist groups had planned to protest the visit, according to news agencies. But several human rights groups had also filed criminal complaints against Bush, demanding that he be taken into custody if he stepped on Swiss soil and investigated for allegations of ordering torture.

A right-wing member of the Swiss parliament also demanded last week Bush's arrest on war crimes allegations if he came to the country, according to Reuters.

Swiss officials countered that, as a former head of state, Bush would be protected with a level of diplomatic immunity, and Keren Hayesod, the group that had invited Bush, said the court actions against the former president did not play into the decision to go forward with the dinner without him.

"We didn't want to put people and property in Geneva at risk. The gala is maintained but George Bush will not take part," the group's lawyer, Robert Equey told the Tribune de Geneve. "The (criminal) complaints did not weigh in the decision."

He noted protests against the G8 summit just across the border in France in 2003 that ended up rampaging through Geneva.

In the past, I would show up where I could to defend this guy. I drove to Crawford, Texas, met JimRob and attended a counter protest to Cindy Sheehan's protests.

After his disgusting words about us recently, he is on his own now. Radicals are constantly harrassing him near his Dallas home. I'll try and not lose sleep over that.

At least one of his twits is a supporter of BO and national healthcare. “cause she went on a trip to africa on our dime and decided it was a “right”. Barbara i think,,,,

Im so glad the Bush era is finished,, maybe we can get some conservatives now. But the topic on this thread is that we are under such a weak president, that he cancelled the trip. Ask yourself this,, would any nation dare to try to arrest Nixon when Reagan was in the oval office? Would they even dare imply that they were even *thinking* about it?

Im not a Bush fan,, BUT, If any nation arrests a former American President the way they did Pinochet, etc, they should *immediately* face an ALL OUT war. NO exceptions.

I don’t care if it’s England, Switzerland, the Germans,,,, ANYONE.

Basically agree with that, and even if the ex-prez is a disgrace like Mr. Carter.

The liberal dream of sending President Bush to the Hague is absurd for similar reasons- the people would never stand for any American citizen being extradited abroad for alleged crimes committed here in America.

If the liberals want to try Bush for “war crimes”, the appropriate venue is here in America. They can complain to Holder and Obama to make the charges.

GW should have gone -- Zero would then be in a vise. Or, he'd do nothing and we'd all find out more than we wanted to know about our next-door neighbors. Thanks Sub-Driver.

Exactly. But i do think “the one” would extradite. It would be a somber sad little Obama telling us about “rule of law” ,,, “our sad duty”,,, “citizen of the world”.

Absolutely the only thing that that would stop Obama is a realistic fear of a violent uprising. But if he could find a way, he wishes he could.

Swiss law is very specific about citizenship. Being born in Switzerland does not give anyone birthright citizenship. So the non-Swiss muzzies can be deported without lengthy notice if they cause harm to the society.

Yes! That would be an act of an enemy! Be ready for war, and even worst(for most nations) cancel all foreign aid, demand all unpaid USA loans to be paid immediately!

THIS is why Bush should have engaged in offensively promoting America, American culture, the American way, American Conservatism, and American law and order.

If he had, these anti Semitic degenerates would be at Gitmo playing tiddlywinks with Obama, bin Laden and Ayres, instead of polluting the streets of Switzerland.

They want to arrest Bush, yet the real criminal, Obama, wanders freely doing whatever mischief crosses his mind

My first thought too....why aren’t they calling for the arrest of Obama?? Last time I checked....Afghanistan is still the same...and we still have troops in Iraqistan. Obama has not changed much in regard to that

Probably the only difference between Bush and Obushma is that Bush only went as far as “Islam is a religion of peace”...Obama is helping the Islamics more

“....they have bowed to the Muslims voice.”

.
And we haven’t?

How much more can any country be conquered by Islam if it allows a victory mosque to be build on the spot where the muslim dagger struck?

Let’s build more wash basins and prayer rooms at taxpayer’s expense.

FWIW

The Bush era is not over yet. It will be over when Jeb’s aspirations for the WH have been demonstrated as fruitless.
