Senior US Marine Says "Multiple Platoons" Are Headed To Egypt
Business Insider ^ | February 5, 2011 | By Nicholas Carlson

A senior member of the US Marine corps is telling people "multiple platoons" are deploying to Egypt, a source tells us.

There is a system within the US Marines that alerts the immediate families of high-ranking marines when their marine will soon be deployed to an emergency situation where they will not be able to talk to their spouses or families.

That alert just went out, says our source.

This senior Marine told our source that the Pentagon will deploy "multiple platoons" to Egypt over the next few days and that the official reason will be 'to assist in the evacuation of US citizens."

Our source was told that "the chances they were going over there went from 70% yesterday to 100% today."

We're keeping these people anonymous because both would get in trouble for sharing this information with the press.

Here comes our next crop of “political refugees”. The good ole USA can always be depended upon to rush into the frey and bring back a few thousand new “citizens”.

How many Marines are there and how will they get into the country? Once in the country, how will they get to the consulate and where will they stay? As per Pew , the USA is more unpopular among Egyptians now then when W was Pres. When the Marines arrive, what reaction will they face? Do we think that our consulate will be taken hostage as in Iran? If some people storm our consulate, will the Marines open fire? I thought the Egyptian army was friendly towards us.

I assume someone has thought this out and balanced the pros and cons.

What will the Marines do, other than anger the people?

What they've always done when the situation goes to snot in some turd world shithole, and the President and/or Congress isn't interested in changing that situation. Rescue Americans. A few platoons can hardly do anything else.

This is not true. We are not going to send any more marines.

Sure is a convenient diversion away from Judge Vinson’s ruling that obamacare is unconstitutional.

Okay, Carter sent in Marines too into Iran in '79. As I recall that didn't turn out so well. Especially since Oblunder is following Carter's footsteps so closely.

As I recall, if you are referring to the botched rescue mission, Carter sent in a diverse set of forces composed of elements of each of the branches of the armed forces, who, by the way, had very little training working together in that type of operation

As I recall, each of the branches wanted its forces to conduct this mission (and claim credit afterwards). Not wanting to offend any of the chiefs of staff, he ordered a combined forces mission.

As it turned out, their comm equipment/procedures was diverse (read not comapible) enough it lead to that tragedy.

The Marines showing up at a crisis like this where US civilians might need their assistance has always been pretty much SOP.

Semper Fi!

Not sure that it is deliberate, but works that way. Media and administration can only divert for so long...tho there is the weather, and superbowl, etc.

Consolates are small satellite offices. We have an Embassy in Egypt. We probably have consulates too, although a quick search did not reveal any.

It’s the Embassy that will need protecting and eventually evacuating. I hope they have a nice flat roof for the helicopters from the 6th fleet to land on.

We should parachute in the marines to block aid all of the roads into and out of Cairo. Starve out all of the trouble makers so the other 79.8 million people in the country can go on with their lives.

Marines will protect our embassy there and get our folks out of there. Have learned from Jimmuh.

As I posted a week ago, the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit MEU was sailing to the N end of the Red Sea. There are three companies of Marines on board with 3 line platoons + a weapons platoon each.

That's plenty of security reinforcement for the embassy, consular offices and airfields.

Sounds to me like this “deployment” (assuming it pans out) includes more Marines than what’s left of the 26th MEU, currently embarked on the USS Kearsarge and USS Ponce in the Red Sea.

And, if they’re talking battalions instead of companies, the Marines may be preparing to secure the Suez Canal and assist in a NEO evacuation. The 600 (or so) Marines on those amphibious ships are enough to secure our diplomatic posts, but we would need more troops to protect the canal and run a NEO. By some estimates there are at least 75,000 Americans in Egypt and NEO planners typically use the “rule of three” in preparing for those operations. In other words, for every American (or third country national that we’re responsible for), two more will show up at the evacuation point.

Based on that rule of thumb, the number of U.S. citizens/other westerners evacuated by the Marines could approach 200,000 (or more). We’ll need more than 600 Marines to run that operation—and protect the canal.

Why?? This isn't our fight and we need to let the Egytians work it out for themselves. Contrary to what too many in our government believe, we ain't the world's police force!!

We need these Marines at home . . . . . for when our own riots break out!
