Battalions are routinely designated as “ACB”s. This only means that those battalions, or parts of those battalions, are prepared to deploy very quickly for “emergency” situations such as Katrina, the oil spill, the Haiti earthquake, etc. They may also be used to secure airfields in the event of evacuations in hostile areas, and this may be what some Marine units will be doing.

The kinds of notifications noted in this story are normal, and so are the rumors from “the Lance Corporal underground” that follow. I have heard from a good source that in this case the rumors of actual deployment for some battalions, including some that have recently returned from Afghanistan, are legit.

As I posted a week ago, the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit MEU was sailing to the N end of the Red Sea. There are three companies of Marines on board with 3 line platoons + a weapons platoon each.

That's plenty of security reinforcement for the embassy, consular offices and airfields.
