Women in the Cairo Street Scenes: a Troubling Photo Essay
inn ^ | 2/6/11 | Prof. Phyllis Chesler

For days now, the mainstream and leftstream media have been telling us that the Muslim Brotherhood is not dangerous, not radically Islamist—but that even if they are Islamist that they are popular amongst the people. Western leftists view the Brothers as engaged in a Hamas-like form of soup kitchen social work/theocratic totalitarianism, but who nevertheless have earned the right to be democratically voted into power by the people. They have been invited to join the negotiations with Mubarak's regime.

Short-sightedly, they claim that if we are serious about standing for democracy and the vote, that we have no choice but to support what may turn out to be an even worse tyranny than that of Mubarak’s.

excellent if chilling article.

What amazing me is one would think media of all groups would rush to point out how women are treated under sharia.
but not a peep by any USA or western media

That should disturb us all.
and no one mentions what sharia law dictates for homosexuals.

There are plenty of cries of hatred for any who think marriage is between and man and a woman
and now cries against sharia which calls for gays to be killed.
stunning really

Very telling indeed. We’re not heading in a good direction.

Sadly, we have to support the lesser evil here. Right now, that's Mubarak.

Unless: a figure emerges, who currently is firm and ruthless, but will eventually step aside for truly free elections in a couple of years. This figure probably would be Christian. Fat chance.

That figure has not emerged. Mubarak is the lesser of the evils, the devil you know.

The leftists who preach "tolerance" would have us tolerate those who DO-NOT-TOLERATE anything but strict Sharia based Islamic society.

And they think living with a truly tolerant Christian in their midst makes them uncomfortable?

They will not like an Islamified world.

Tolerance, reason, and true equality will be a thing of the past.

This will end the same a Russia did with the Bolshivicks (a radical minority) running things, and Iran did with Mullahs.

I am not so sure that it will. The US is occupied in two wars and the only leverage they have is the threat of cutting off aid. Egypt is stalling for time. They are killing off fringe players. Israel supports Mubarak.

If Mubarak plays rope a dope for a while, Obama is going to be hampered by his reelection campaign and other crisis. I think he is in a very weak position.

Soon coming to Turkey. They'll be like Iran in a couple of years. It is kind of funny since over 50% of the population is considered secular. But the minority (30%+) is insisting on Turkey switching to Sharia.

I'm curious to see whether the Turkish Army steps in to prevent Sharia from being enacted or are they already corrupted by Islamists (just like Pakistan).

That’s one of the main reasons that Democrats picked Charlotte to host the convention in ‘12. As it stands right now, President Obama does not have a chance of winning a single Southern state and thus may lose the reelection narrowly (think of Gore’s defeat back in ‘00).

Towards the end:

My reading of these photos suggests that Egyptian women have already been Islamified. Whether they have done so to please their loving (or abusive) families or a favorite mullah, whether it was peer pressure from girlhood on that did it; or whether it was the teachings of the Muslim Brotherhood being preached in every mosque, on every media channel, and in school that did it, the fact is:

It is done. Women are veiled. Such women—and their fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons, will vote for the Muslim Brotherhood to run their country.

She might have a point. It would be interesting to look through a more extensive set of pictures of the rallies to see if most of the women were indeed covered in Islamic garb.

“They will not like an Islamified world.”

No they won’t but how can they not realize it NOW and report on it?
if all the western world’s media reported honestly on this it could perhaps slow sharia down in otherwise free countries.

If they are not reporting the truth because they are afraid of being targeted what on earth do they think would happen if muslims gain control?

A lot of the events that occurring in Egypt are the same that played out in Iran from August 1978 through April 1979. I just wonder how many mercenaries are there that are an active part of the demonstrations. Also, they are there to perform executions as necessary just like they did in Iran.

I think it will end poorly by the end of this year. The Muslim Brotherhood after Mubarack is out, will like the Bolsheviks overthrow the the majority (Menschavicks). Egypt will have lost everything.

Well, you gotta figure that even if they were not so inclined to don the full coverings; trying to go about your business while whacked out jihadies are roaming around ready to beat anyone or anything that tics them off; you might want to make yourself less of a target by wearing one anyway.

But I suspect such women out there are probably the exception, and not the rule.

The US is occupied in two wars...

Not true. Don't buy the media line. We are engaged in ONE war against radical Islamists. In this war, we stand largely, though not entirely alone. And by "we" in this context, I mean Americans on the political Right.

Just like in the Russian revolution. The radical Bolsheviks overthrew the elected majority secular-libitarian Menschavicks.
