No no no. All VW engines have been built in Germany. The cars were assembled in Mexico. The Passat will be built in America but the engines will still be imported from Germany. Highly regarded engines by the way.

Interesting trick when you consider that the first car isn’t supposed to roll off the line in Chattanooga until late March 2011 at the earliest.....

They must be made in Brazil, too. I was down there last week and VW’s were everywhere. Lots of old style Beetles and vans. Quite a few body styles from VW and others that I’d not seen before, too.

“5. Chrysler: Eminem, Imported from Detroit.”

VW in TN, BMW in SC, Mercedes and others better tell those states if you “import” the UAW then it is Auf Wiedersehn. Buh Bye.

I do not watch Obama TV but I saw the game at a relative’s house. Most of the TV ads were garbage. The VW ad was cute. Chrysler’s ad touting Detroit and Obama/UAW/Chrysler was laughable. Paid for with taxpayer money.

The general consensus is the classic Bug needs to be babied along but the New Beetle is a very reliable car. The next generation New Beetle should interest male buyers put off by the first generation’s cute look. 1st generation was on the Golf platform and the 2012 is on the Jetta platform. I don’t think it can float. ;-)

I was disappointed with the Ozzy ad. I was hoping he would bite off Bieber's head.

Generally the ads weren't all that good this year. Such a big deal was mad about the Bud ad, including having ad "trailers" in the past couple of weeks of football games but it turned out to be a dud. The Bud Light kitchen rebuild ad was one of the funnier ones.

The general consensus is correct. I've had several Beetles during my high school and college years. I wouldn't go out of the driveway without a clutch cable, throttle cable, and a tune up kit. I liked the Baja version best because I could drop the engine out in 20 minutes or less. The engines also ran cooler without all the cooling shrouds on the stock Beetle.

That one almost killed me. Steve didn't think it was funny at all.

If you like to tinker they’re one of the cheapest cars out there to keep on the road. Gotta keep those valves adjusted, though! (and track the valve stretch so the engine doesn’t inadvertently ingest a valve when they go out of tolerance). Not many cars that will outperform a Beetle in the snow, either, especially a Baja that has been raised a little.

IIRC, the VW Fox was Brazilian built.

And, Pennsylvania had a VW plant around the same time.

I’m not, but I want to get more hands-on experience. My dad was terrible for car repair and didn’t teach me anything.

Engine plant in city unlikely

Volkswagen’s chief in Chattanooga said Friday he does not expect the city to win a new VW engine plant that the German automaker is planning for North America.

Frank Fischer, CEO of VW’s operations here, said while local company officials pitched Chattanooga, the engine plant will go elsewhere as it now stands.

“We said, ‘Please do it,’” Fischer said. “We were supporting it.”

But VW officials are looking at such issues as capacity and demand for the engines when it comes to locating the plant, he said.

Mexico has been named by VW’s top brass as a potential site for the engine plant. VW’s production plant in Puebla, Mexico, has an annual capacity of 525,000 vehicles.
