So what changed the Reagan Carter numbers is the lesson that needs to be learned.

It was a simple question Reagan asked the American public: “Are you better off that you were Four Years Ago?” Rich or poor, black or white, democrat or republican, you could only answer that question one way - No.

Palin, or whoever wins the nomination needs to use the same strategy. Maybe reword the question a little, “Are you better off than you were four Trillion Dollars ago?” or “ Are you better off than you were two stimulus packages ago?”

Actually you should have used the poll of Reagan down by 25 points to Carter, in I believe May of 1980.....it wasn’t Gallup but it was a major poll of that time

It was a simple question Reagan asked the American public: “Are you better off that you were Four Years Ago?” Rich or poor, black or white, democrat or republican, you could only answer that question one way - No.

It was a lot more than that, though: Reagan also offered an alternative approach, which came to be known as "Reagonomics."

I don't know if you recall it, but also some time prior to Reagan's famous debate question, the RNC had begun running a series of amusing ads to prepare the ground for Reagan's economic message. And, of course, the bad old days of Carter's recession were in full cry: people were looking for an alternative answer -- people already knew things were bad.

And at the same time, Reagan also offered confident leadership in a Cold War that Carter seemed determined to lose. That, rather than economic issues, was a major factor in a lot of peoples' decision to back Reagan.

Sarah Palin is no Reagan. She can ask the "telling question," as indeed everybody can and does, too. But can she follow up? Has she offered a cogent alternative? Not yet.

I believe there was a poll about a year earlier that showed Carter leading Reagan by about 20 points. Polls this far ahead a useless.

Reagan turned around the poll numbers when he crushed Carter in the debates. The GOP debates will show if Palin is up to the task.

Correct. All the other issues could be finessed, but there was no dodging or equivocating the answer to that one question.

BTW it was that same question that won Reagan an even larger landslide in 84.

The woman hasn’t freaking even ran yet! Let her compete against everyone else with their ideals and plans for the country and see who is better instead of you and your buddies trashing her more than you trash Obama

She offered a more sensible thought on the Egypt crisis than a lot of the GOP potentials, if they have then show it.

I am glad Reagan and the country didn’t listen to the RINO’s and party boys in 1980 and hope the country won’t listen to them again in 2012.

To hear them tell it anything other than one of their approved and appointed liberal puke candidates will get us beat just like in 1964.

If a real conservative gets the nomination watch them scatter like angry wasps just having had their nest of corruption and power hit with a full blast of Raid spray.

Arguing as to which lefty (Obama or Carter) was worse is like suggesting one wets the bed three times a night and the other only two. Each are terrible bed wetters.

The larger issue is that Palin is not comparable to Reagan and the sooner Republicans learn that the better.

Oh I have no doubts that if a conservative wins the nod...the Rino’s will try a third party route ala Murkowshit...

Most likely Huntsman...

Yes..the moderates would rather have an Obama than a Palin.

Yes, that was because the candidate was Ronald Reagan. NOBODY in this current crop compares to the man. His name recognition and favorability ratings were way above any of the current candidates.

... because regardless of what party they come from, entrenched politicians benefit from the democrats big government ideology.

Thats why true believers willing to argue their case are needed, not candidates who's only qualification seems to be their immediate popularity.

I hear ya, we all miss Reagan, wish he were back right now but what can ya do, the past is the past. As far as these ridiculous polls that show Sarah trailing by a lot, look, sometimes polls can be totally accurate, and sometimes they can be total BS. Like I told my cousin “If you believe these polls, go vote for Obama, because that is what these pollsters want u to do” these polls, they are ALL meant to bring people down, to make some believe either Sarah Palin or others don’t have a chance. You know how many people I heard on radio shows in 2008 say that they won’t go vote because “the media already said McCain lost” yeah if those fools had actually gone to the polls we might actually have won. Yeah McCain was a dirtbag but he would have been better then Obama, A LOT better

The point is not that Palin is Reagan. The point is, the media pimped the democrat and rinos in 1980 just as they are today. Palin is not Reagan but she is no rino. BTW, Reagan might be called a rino in todays enviroment.

I have been reminding everyone about this for months.

Palins #’s don't matter at this point only Obama’s matter ... if he is below 50% all the other candidate has to do between now and election day after all the primaries and all the dozens of debates... is prove they are even remotely qualified for the job, and they will CRUSH the incumbent.

Agreed. BTW, I think Palin will be the GOP nominee. Who is her competition? Pawlenty? Romney? Huckabee? Please.

Let's hope and work our butts off to refer to her as Madam President.

If she wants to run, she can absolutely get the GOP nomination, the point is, will the GOP allow her to run..because I see the GOP doing whatever it takes to ensure that Romney is the nominee..the way the elitists are running the show in the GOP they would rather have Obama get re-elected then see Palin win. Just like in 2008, Nicole Wallace and others, I can pretty much guarentee they voted for Obama, they tanked the election because their guy Romney wasn’t on the ballot. For me, its not “Palin or bust” yes she is absolutely my first choice, doesn’t mean I would ONLY vote for her, I’d vote for DeMint, Bachmann, Cain, and anyone else that I share my views with, I won’t sell my soul and vote for some fool that is just another Obama. I already held my nose to vote for McCain in 2008 even though I knew he was a schmuck, I won’t do that again
