Obama to call for $53B for high-speed rail

President Barack Obama is calling for a six-year, $53 billion investment in high-speed rail, as he seeks to use infrastructure spending to jumpstart job creation.

An initial $8 billion investment will be part of the budget plan Obama is set to release Monday. If Congress approves the plan, the money would go toward developing or improving trains that travel up to 250 miles per hour, and connecting existing rail lines to new projects. The White House wouldn't say where the money for the rest of the program would come from, though it's likely Obama would seek funding in future budgets or transportation bills.

You would think this stupid piece of crap would quit spending.

You know that he only is for something that will line the pockets of his fellow communists off the backs of taxpayers.

That is all that Obama is about.

53 Billion for Hi-Speed Rail? If the past is any indication of the future(and it usually is), this will likely ballon to 2 or 3 times that before it’s finished. A la the “Big Dig” project in Boston.

Make the deficit $1.5 trillion + $53 billion.

It would cost at least 100X as much to rebuild new tracks for trains such as this. It’s not the trains, it’s the tracks stupid.

A local talker also likes to point out, these things wear out after 20-30 years. So you set yourself up to spend this every 20 years or so. Not to mention the enormous operating costs.

Didn’t one of the Obama stimulus bills have billions already going to high speed rail? Is this like the banks? Each stimulus gives them billions on top of billions and the banks sit on it and jack up their fees to screw us even more? Are we paying for this 10 times and some of the money is going to Obama’s muslim brotherhood or the promotion of Islam food in school cafeteria’s, or Obama 2012 campaign?

How about building fifty nuclear power stations?

How about building a fifty offshore platforms?

How about building that pipeline from Alaska and the new pipeline from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico?

Now, that will jumpstart this economy. And you can do it with private money.

I don’t want to see the federal govt funding infrastructure but at least its a step up from ‘stimulus’ programs that pay people to sit on their assets and produce nothing.

The moron seems to think that there’s a magic unicorn out there that pees Koolaid and farts rainbows and poops $1000 bills in unlimited amounts.

Hey Obozo, we’re broke! Where do you think you can scrounge up 53b from? The couch cushions are empty.

why is “high-speed rail” the dead horse that liberals always beat??

there might have been at least one hint viewable during the Egyptian demonstrations.

did you notice that in addition to communications that were being used by the protesters being shut down, mass transit getting protesters to the protest sites were also shut down?

control of the masses..........

Well, I’m ‘calling’ for a lot of things over the next six years too. However, I’m only going to get them...IF I CAN AFFORD THEM.

The so-called high-speed rail could never become a reality in the United States, because we cannot isolate the rail line from people like they can in communist nations where they just seize land from people, towns, cities, counties and states over all their cries and objections. It will only result in a rail that “could” go high speed, but never will be allowed to.

Right, an “Investment” in Socialism like AMTRACK. Plus a whole new Government division to handle the gross waste.

Exciting stuff here.......

They can barely keep aircraft safe from Muzzie scum today. And that’s only at the start and end points of the journey, aka airports. Muzzie scum will have a murderers field day with HSR because the target is accessible the entire route.

Oh wait, our Muzzie scum occupier of the White House wants this. Naturally.

How about some tractor factories and hydroelectric damns.

Work them into the Five Year Plan after the transitional New Economic Policy.
What a retread.

If this congress budgets even one dollar for this, they are out of their minds. I’m pretty sure this is dead-on-arrival.

This is just him setting up an issue to run on in 2012. And let him, I say. If he wants to run on the fact that we wouldn’t give him $50 billion to build a train, when we already gave him a trillion that was supposed to have been for exactly this, and he still didn’t get it done, hey, we can have that debate.

I like the idea of a high speed rail system but the government screws up everything like this that it touches. Why can’t someone like Bill Gates or Warren Buffett pay for it. If someone that has had demonstrated business accomplishments were to take this on, it might actually have a possibility of success. If the government does it, we’re just talking about another boondoggle designed to pay off political cronies.

There are other reasons such as cost to condemn high speed rail but taking land by eminent domain is not one of them.

How do you think the land for interstate highways are obtained in this country?
