Skip to comments.Pawlenty impresses Iowans on substance; Group backtracks on Huckabee commitment

Tim Pawlenty said all the right things during the inaugural Presidential Lecture Series event sponsored by The FAMiLY Leader. A crowd of 150 attendees, plus a dozen media members, gathered at Pella Christian High School early Monday afternoon to listen to the former Minnesota governor. The crowd liked what they heard, but was not blown away by Pawlentys delivery.
If elections were won only on substance, Pawlenty would stand a strong chance in the 2012 Iowa Caucus. However, style matters too. Oratorical skills propelled Barack Obama to the White House in 2008. Pawlenty will need to become a more passionate speaker as the campaign moves forward. He possesses an everyman quality that could endear him to caucus goers, but lacks the soaring rhetoric of Obama, folksy humor of Mike Huckabee, and fiery charisma of Chris Christie.

Question is, is Pawlenty in it to win it, or is he a stalking horse busting up Huckabee so Huck never gets in the game?
...considering how Iowa swooned over Obama and launched his campaign, I have no confidence in their judgement...Republican or Democrat.
If we had to take a boring Governor, I’d rather have Indiana’s Mitch Daniels.
I don't know. It sure doesn't seem like he has any fire in the belly, no passion whatsoever. I don't know if you have to mirror Obama's charisma, but you have to have at least some charisma, to be believable. Pawlenty has none.
Iowans, as a group, are not well informed. They are sheep that follow the Baaa in front of them.
Pawlenty is a smooth Romney shill, which is even worse than Huck, the liberal Dem in RINO clothing.
PAWLENTY- the governor that made no public outcry while AL FRANKEN stole the US senate seat from Coleman? No thank you...I am looking for politicians with a back bone and a set of you know whats...
We’re trying to beat Obama. What has Pawlenty said or done to make you believe he’s the one?
Why a conservative would vote for Elmer Gantrybee is beyond me.
Pawlenty signs bill increasing ethanol content in gasoline
St. Paul, Minn. Gov. Pawlenty signed the ethanol mandate into law at a gas station that sells E-85, a blend containing 85-percent ethanol.
The new law would double the states current requirement that all gasoline sold in the state contain 10 percent of the corn-based additive.
I bet this would impress them, too.
Either answer is just as good for me. No More Big Spending Republicans, period.
And like the rest of the field, he is spookily silent on the subject of the corrupt banking sector.
Still wide open for me, only Romney and Huckabee are completely off the table.
Sigh. Yes, sadly, what it takes to be president is not only knowledge and good policy, but presence, charisma, and the ability to communicate.
Funny, we DO have a candidate who possesses all of those things, however, guys like Pawlenty and such just don’t seem to want to get behind HER ....hmmmmm.
When she grabs the issue with both hands, the Palin '12 sign goes up in my yard.
According to local talk radio host Steve Deace the following candidates are seen as organizing to win the Iowa Caucuses.
Governor Tim Pawlenty
Palin and Huck are definitely NOT making an effort and Mitt Romney will most likely try to have a small presence late in the game.
I personally think the “stalking horse” stuff is a fragment of overheated imaginations.
...I am looking for politicians with a back bone and a set of you know whats...
They'll probably be first and second place. They were second and third last time.
In the 1952 election, Nixon was an obvious stalking horse for Eisenhower.
He worked actively to destroy Macarthur, who was the ‘Reagan,’ or ‘Palin,’ of that election, and was rewarded with the vice presidency.
A lot of states swooned over Obama before they knew better.
Don’t forget he was the black Jesus and waved his arm and promised to calm the seas and the raising tide. Like Hitler, many fell for him including independents. Obama has lost all of his satanic magic he only has 22% at most.
The media want Romney. I want West.
A poll of Iowa showed they want an outsider.
didn’t this guy get on TV and distance himself from Palin’s crosshairs, thereby extending the narrative?
I JUST HAVEN'T HEARD MUCH ABOUT HIS POSITIONS ON THE ISSUES.
Pawlenty, Doyle and other Midwest governors sign on to global warming pact
4 years ago he was all over Gobull Warming.
Wait to see George Stephanopoulos telling everyone "xxxx xxxxxxx" is doing really great and coming up in the polls...
That will be the MSM Overlords pick for designated Republican loser to "The Øne" and hundreds of millions worth of propaganda, face time interviews and softball games will be tossed their way.
I don’t watch TV, so I won’t see Stephanopoulos do anything.
Ping and double ping. Any state GOP, or other party with a vested interest in the conservative or GOP candidate for president, that commits to a candidate this far out is just plain stupid.
However, it is never too soon to begin ruling out candidates who’ve a history of RINO/demrat positions. That includes Pawlenty and Romney.
I suspect its also these follows who’re generating polls or statements that favor them. IMHO, the heavyweights (Palin, for one) have been coy about running. The reason I like Palin is that she is the only potential candidtate who has been taking on Onada and his policies in a meaningful way. Seems like a lot of other pretenders are waiting to see which way the wind is blowing.
It is important that conservatives support the candidate with genuine conservative core beliefs—and who has demonstrated through deeds they are sincere in those beliefs.
Who is West?
Are we going to start the stalking horse stuff again this cycle. Pawlenty has been running for a year. After the guy Huck pardoned killed 4 cops, I never thought he would run again. Why would Pawlenty enter the race a year ago to try to damage Huck’s chances. Huck’s done all the damage himself. He doesn’t need a stalking horse.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I won’t vote for a man that turns his back on the call to preach and save souls, to barter for votes...
MacArthur was never a serious candidate for President. And a good thing, too.
I am far from sold on Pawlenty, but as someone who would like to see some other, more serious alternatives crack Romney, Palin, and Huckabee’s chokehold on the top tier of the Republican Presidential field, I am hoping to see Pawlenty and others gain some traction in Iowa.
Unfortunately, after reading the article, there doesn’t seem to be much evidence that Pawlenty really “impressed” Iowa Republicans, as suggested by the headline of this thread - which, by the way, is different from the headline of the source article. That is unfortunate, because “substance” is something we desperately need from our eventual nominee, and given their disproportionate role as Presidential kingmakers, I’m hoping Iowans respond to substance.
Umm...then maybe you should read the article.

You tube google Lt Col Allen West
I would love for the Governor of Virginia to run. I think he may have the “it” factor as well as the policies. He comes across as presidential, I think, although I’ve only seen him a few times. The American voter votes 1/3 on policy and 2/3 on looks or gravitas or whatever it is. Reagan had “it” big time!!!
The Iowa interactive group on Fox last night want Chris Christie but were saying Huckabee because he is actually planning a run.
Yeah, you've got to be at least engaging and nominally compelling. Pawlenty seems to be the guy who's most likely to run the Fred Thompson-like campaign of 2012. Fred would have made a great President, but his campaign was flat and uninspired. That's the kind of campaign I'd expect to see from Pawlenty, and perhaps from Daniels as well.
Personally, I'm a big Bob McDonnell fan. It's just a shame he didn't run for VA governor when Kaine did, instead of four years later. Bob's a earnest and sober guy, but he has just enough charisma to be engaging - kind of like Jim DeMint.
If he accomplishes no more than getting the Huckster out of the race, I think he has a good shot at the #2 spot on the ticket with either Sarah Palin or Herman Cain.
Personally, I find Pawlenty about as inspiring as watching paint dry. But he could very well put three libtard leaning states (Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin) into play.
Fair enough. Let’s hope she does.
You have no ides what you’re talking about.
Didn't Jesus say something like that...
Rev 3:16 "So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth."Or was it the opposite?
>> “SHE is also spookily silent on the subject of the corrupt banking sector.” <<
She condemned the “Federal Reserve” system back last spring.
