The first picture has been released of Meryl Streep playing Baroness Thatcher in The Iron Lady, the forthcoming Hollywood film about the former British prime minister's life.
The biopic, which also stars Jim Broadbent as Lady Thatcher's husband Sir Denis, began filming at the end of January.
It is being made by Pathe and Film4 and is directed by British director Phyllida Lloyd, who is best known for her theatre work.
Streep, one of the most successful actresses in Hollywood, was seen as one of the few women capable of convincingly playing Lady Thatcher.
However, producers faced concerns over how an American would be received playing the part, and suggestions that the role should have gone go to a British actress.
The film will focus mainly on the period immediately prior to the Falklands war. . . .

It will be a smear job. Amazing how people on FR pimp for the liberal media, hollywood, celebs.
British thespians had better pray Hollywood doesn't retaliate.
My choice would have been Emma Thompson.
I don’t know much about the Iron Lady but Meryl Streep really can’t pull off her looks, at least not in that picture. She looks like she just saw a tarantula or something while the Baroness looks steely and confident.
I totally resent hollywood scum-sucking progressive liberal America haters who think they are great for doing what they do in the first place. I resent even more when such an anti-conservative hateful actor gets to play the part of real hero who stood up for everything that actor was mostly against.
I read about this movie. It portrays Thatcher as a dementia riddle old bat who regrets all the decisions she made in the past. It is upsetting a lot of people, including Maggie herself. A real smear job.
My choice would’ve been Bo Derek. At least she’s a conservative.
Both Emma and Meryl are lfetists whose politics are far from those of Mrs. Thatcher's.
This is going to be a 'Hatchet Job' on her and Reagan as well which is why I have not spent a $ on a movie in the theater in years.
That comes as no surprise.
I predict a box office failure. Thatcher fans won’t go see it because they know it’ll trash Thatcher. Thatcher haters won’t go see it because why would they see a movie about someone they don’t like.
I would have gone with a British actress. As soon as I saw Streep had the role, I knew I wouldn’t want to see it.
Helen Mirren was astounding as Queen Elizabeth II. I wonder if she could have played Lady Thatcher? That said, Streep has an uncanny ability for morphing accents of every type imaginable (check her out in her early films playing a Pole, a South African, etc). She is a pro and perhaps the best actress in Hollywood. I believe she will do a great job personally.
I thought the same thing. I wondered if she could really portray, with honesty, this great woman.
And SHE can act.
Just what we need, a botoxed "Baroness"... Streep can't hold a candle to the real deal.
Is there any female conservative actress in England left?
Mirren would also be an admirable choice.
Thatcher was the best PM of England since Churchill.
The earrings and necklace are spot on. That’s it.
Last thing I want to see is more leftwing spin
albie ~ My choice wouldve been Bo Derek. At least shes a conservative.
Hollywood would cast Michael Moore as Ronald Reagan.
This will be another Hollywood smear job - bank on it. The left in the UK still hates Thatcher.
Look at the kindness and wisdom in the eyes of Lady Thatcher. Compare that to the deer in the headlights look Streep is portraying. That alone is a smear job.
Streep is one of the few real actresses left in Hollyweird today. Ya want Britney Spears to play Lady Thatcher?
Looking at the two photos side-by-side the likeness is close enough....and like any veteran actress Streep will turn into the Prime Minister before our very eyes.
Really, did Errol Flynn look like General Custer? Who cares! I actually hoped Custer would have looked like Flynn. But Flynn played him to the hilt with zest and flair and hunkiness and darn good dramatic acting....and that, my friends, is why the marvelous bio-pics of the thirties and forties were such a big part of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
(P.S....it's more important to pay attention to what some lefty screen writers write for the actors to say in this movie. As Shakespeare might have said, "Herein may lie the rub")
Conservatives can role play Liberals because, at root, all that means is acting selfish, immature, close-minded and refusing to take responsibility for anything. In other words, acting like a spoiled brat of a five year old. Since we have all been five years old brats at one time, and since all have had experience dealing with such, it’s not that difficult. All we have to do is pretend to regress to that level.
Liberals, on the other hand, have difficulty playing Conservatives because that would mean acting mature, reasonable, even-handed and acknowledging that acts have consequences and that people must be held responsible for their own success or lack thereof. In other words, they have to act like adults — and they just do not know how. They would have to mature past their current level in order to play that kind of role — but if they did that, they wouldn’t be Liberals anymore.
"Left-wing fantasy: The film will portray Thatcher as a delusional dementia sufferer, even if she remains active, for instance visiting David Cameron recently.
“Streep, one of the most successful actresses in Hollywood, was seen as one of the few women capable of convincingly playing Lady Thatcher”
No, she is seen as one of the few—maybe the only, I don’t really know that world all that well—actresses of her age who can headline a hit movie. Oh, and she’s famous for doing accents.
Liberal hit piece? I don't know, but Mamma Mia was just stupid. I'm embarrassed to admit I actually saw that in a movie theater.
Meryl Streep looks clueless... is the movie going to be a spoof?
Thatcher looks far from clueless in her pic. She’s all business with just a little smile.
Who’s playing Reagan? I heard something about Robert Forster recently—which would be fine with me—but I don’t know if it was in connection to this film.
Some posts from the past on this topic:
Streep is a fine actress but even she couldn’t save THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE.
Get a grip. It's a movie.
Whatever happened to simple, clever conversation?
I beleive Meryl Streep has the most Oscar nominations. She never won though.
I think she could pull it off I hope Meryl Streep don’t turn Maggie Thatcher into Faye Dunwway Joan Crawford character
She doesn’t look anything like her.
I thought she won 2. I’ll check.
“Streep has an uncanny ability for morphing accents of every type imaginable (check her out in her early films playing a Pole, a South African, etc)”
Accents are overrated. Like physical deformities, mental retardation, and general insanity, they’re showy shortcuts to praise. That is, for people (like me) who can’t tell the difference between average and exceptional immitations. Passable and awful ones, yes, the difference is glaring. But it’s not worth praise to be passable.
When a foreigner hits a spot-on impression of my native accent, that’s notable. I’m thinking now of Hugh Laurie as tv’s House, whom I would never have taken as British had I not been so informed. Since I’m not Polish or South African, I can’t say how well Streep did, except to say it was believable. Leave it to Poles and South Africans to sing her praises. From my perspective, it’s merely something I have to get past so as to appreciate the truly important aspects of performance. That’s why I call it “showy.”
She won for Sophie’s Choice and Kramer vs. Kramer. Been nominated about a bajillion times.
“Hugh Laurie as tvs House, whom I would never have taken as British had I not been so informed”
That’s not quite true. You can hear it when he yells, sings, and talks fast. But the rest of the time it’s uncanny.
we knew you were a commie leftist pimp!
How dare somebody post an article you don’t like? You convinced me, Frantzie...I used to think you’re a jerk, and now I’m sure.
