(Reuters) - A Pittsburgh woman was sentenced to two years probation on Tuesday for accidentally sitting on and smothering her infant granddaughter, authorities said.
Elane Springs, 50, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of children in the death of 1-month-old Tyjahe Springs on September 17, 2008.
Springs said she had been using a pillow to keep the baby from falling off the couch while she did housework, according to court documents.
When she grew tired from housework, she sat down on the couch for several hours before getting up and realizing she had been sitting on the baby, the documents said.

Ms. Springs told detectives she laid Tyjahe on a couch so the infant could sleep, then did housework until she became tired and returned to sit next to the baby. When she stood up several hours later to use the bathroom, she realized she had been sitting on the infant, she said.
Instead of calling 911, police said, Ms. Springs, not realizing Tyjahe was lifeless, tried to revive the infant by patting her with water, then dressed her in a T-shirt and placed her in a car-seat on a table. The baby's mother, arriving at the house several hours later, called 911.
When police arrived, Tyjahe was dead. The medical examiner's office ruled that her death was caused by asphyxiation. Ms. Springs was not charged in the case until 2010; police said the delay was due to the length of the district attorney's office investigation.
Ms. Springs appeared in court today in an elegant black hat and a yellow skirt-suit. She did not speak except to answer questions asked by the judge.

She dressed the baby after she realized it was dead instead of calling 9-11..... I would say she was sick of the baby crying and sat on it...

Something about this story really smells.
I agree that her behavior after she supposedly discovered that she has “accidentally” sat on the baby for 2 hours is extremely incriminating.
If she had immediatedly called 911, or attempted CPR and then called 911, I could MAYBE believe this was simply a tragic accident.
But, IMHO, she is either a killer or criminally insane, and in either case should be locked up.
I love how her lawyer used the facts that she was a “high school graduate” and was never in trouble before to get leniency. Sure, as long as you finish 12th grade, you should get one free baby killing. /sarc

Idiots are going to send us to early graves. There’s no black hat - elegant or otherwise - and the attorney has the yellow outfit on. I don’t care what education level the accused had - what level did the writer have?? NONE?
