A Hamline University law professor has been convicted of failing to file state tax returns for 2004 through 2007. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that Robin Magee, who will be sentenced April 1, is not expected to spend time in jail. She told investigators she did not understand tax law. Magee originally faced felony charges, which were dropped when prosecutors determined she did not purposely try to avoid paying her taxes. A jury convicted her of gross misdemeanors. A Department of Revenue investigator testified that Magee has a "long-term pattern" of not filing returns, having failed to do so from 1991 to 2003 as well. In those years, the state filed "commissioner-filed returns." Attorneys argued whether or not Magee was still required to file returns.

You don’t have to be a law professor to know that you have to file state tax returns.

Good thing she was a leftist law professor, a blue collar construction worker would have gotten 20 years. There is simply no excuse for a guy like that to not understand tax law, none.

Robin Magee of Hamline University — took St. Paul police to task for carrying Tasers in schools. She argued that police need no more than “a stern command” to control unruly schoolchildren. Red Lake Senior High School security guard Derrick Brun tried that. His funeral was Monday.

a caucasian male blue collar construction employee (I detest worker as it used all the time) would have been lucky with only 20 years.

How many will be sent away when there aren’t enough producers to provide the goodies and giveaways to welfare queens, unions, illegals, and countries that hate us?

From http://law.hamline.edu/robin-magee.html

B.A., University of Michigan J.D., University of Michigan Law School

"I believe, as the founders of this country espoused, that the greatest threat to law and order, peace and liberty is tyranny, not crime. I, therefore, believe that the highest calling of the lawyer is the call to fight against tryanny and government-sponsored or tolerated oppression. Thus, I struggle in my classes to instill in my students the knowledge of the law and the critical and analytical skills to hold the government (and everyone else) accountable to the rule of law and the rights of all people."

Bringing perspective combined with current issues, Professor Magee teaches Criminal Procedure, Criminal Law, Property, Police Practices, and a seminar on race and law at Hamline.

Prior to joining Hamline, Magee was a Bigelow Fellow and Lecturer of Law at the University of Chicago Law School. She has also served as a law clerk to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. While in private practice, Magee concentrated in the area of criminal, entertainment, and tax law.

Through a Bates Travel Fellowship, she was a research fellow at the University of Nairobi, where she examined Kenyan laws regulating the activities of U.S. companies operating in Kenya.

Professor Magee is involved with the Committee Seeking Equal Justice for the Minnesota Eight and serves on the executive board of the National Conference of Black Lawyers.

She needs to send her resume to the WHITEHOUSE, I’m sure they have a job that will fit for her.

I’m self-employed and I hate the IRS. But I file my returns, even if I can’t pay them at the time because my income in one or another quarter was so low I didn’t have the money for the quarterly payment.

I pay it eventually. A year ago, I finished paying off money I owed them from 2004 because my business had collapsed in the third quarter of that year (for reasons I still don’t understand) and I didn’t have enough saved up to pay them. The tax on self-employed people is way too high. I want it reduced. But I pay it.

On the other hand, I guess if you’re of the right color and the right political persuasion, you can get by...up to a certain point. I guess she hit that point.

Always file your return. Just do not include a check.

she did not understand tax law.

Are there no accountants? Are there no CPA's?

Not defending her but the tax laws are a rubiks cube.

If she is an employee, taxes were withheld from her paycheck, right?

They don’t normally prosecute anyone for failing to collect their tax refund. There must be more to this story.

She appears to have been employed (that is, an employee subject to regular withholding). I don’t know her particular situation, but I’d assume that she was doing something funky with her withholding taxes.

Joan Baez and other leftists never used to pay taxes, but their accountants would put the appropriate amount into escrow accounts that were then “seized” by the Feds so that the taxpayers in question could get credit for being tax resistors and not paying for the Vietnam War, but the Feds could get their money and there would be no adverse publicity for either party.
