NASA says its pockets not deep enough for new rocket
CNN ^ | 2/8/11 | John Zarrella

Posted on 02/08/2011 4:50:10 PM PST by Nachum

The marching orders from Congress and the White House to NASA were pretty straightforward. Go out and build a new big rocket to replace the retiring space shuttle fleet. Unlike the shuttle, the new rocket has to be powerful enough to get out of low Earth orbit and carry humans to an asteroid and eventually Mars, perhaps even the moon. There must also be a test flight by 2016. But at this point, NASA officials are warning of a potentially devastating setback to future space exploration. Its first new rocket in 40 years may not happen because the agency doesn't

"NASA says its pockets not deep enough for new rocket"

Rockets??? I thought NASA's job was to lift the drooping self esteem of Moslems by reminding them they 'invented' algebra. Although those same Moslems might want to be reminded that the ancient Egyptians had far more advanced mathematics than algebra, which they used to build the Pyramids; those phenominal structures that even most modern day architects cannot explain.

The only real relationship between NASA and Islam should be that NASA get commissioned to develop an 'invisible' non-nuclear tipped missile that will fall straight on top of their moon rock in mecca and vaporize it. And nobody could prove from whence it came. Ahhh, but I dream. STAND UP, NASA, and shout from the rooftops how wonderful Muslims are, that's your new job, foster Islamo-esteem. Forget all that missile and space ship stuff.

Are we a third world country all of a sudden?

Yes, haven't you heard?

I like how the article gives Barrys goal of landing on an A$$teroid, then maybe Mars, and oh yes, possibly the moon.

The most logical and accessible target is listed as an afterthought because Barry doesn't want to go there again. I think it makes most sense since we really haven't tried to USE the moon yet, we just went - picked up some rocks - and left for a very long time.

What an absolute shame, tragedy. Had we known what would become of our vaunted space program we would have all been devastated. Certainly Stanley Kubrick, Arthur C. Clarke for sure.

The vision of grandeur, exhilaration, wonders of exploration, Mankind reaching out to the heavens, indubitably where one day we'll be headed if Mankind ever expects to survive despite its best (worst?) intentions to the contrary.

Imagine it was in the final days of the 60's decade. President Kennedy's goal of landing a man on the moon met its goal landing four men on the moon before the decade was out with time to spare Somehow you had the ability to look forty years into the future to the present year, 2011. Certainly you take for granted that we've colonized the moon in a big way, the only suspense would be is whether we've made in to Mars, have started a colony by 2011

.... The headlines for NASA are coming into focus, getting clearer, let's see, NASA, yeah, yeah..!!What??&$#*$??!!!(the equivalent of WTF for the 60's).

NASA says its pockets not deep enough for new rocket. What??&$#*$??!!!
NASA says its pockets not deep enough for new rocket! What??&$#*$??!!!!!
NASA says its pockets not deep enough for new rocket!!What??&$#*$??!!!

Who woulda thunk it?? An absolute tragedy for the USA, the world, Mankind... :-(

It proves beyond a doubt that the space program, Apollo. landing men on the moon was not at all about science only about the Cold War, the need to outdo each other.

The comment no more whitey on the moon was totally tacky, tasteless and despite how we all feel about Zero, it really had no place on this thread.

“Are we a third world country all of a sudden? “

Just last week Texas accepted electricity from Mexico because of power outages.

You can re-invent the wheel for future use, but for now we need to get going as inexpensively as possible.

There was nothing inexpensive about the Saturn. Its cost was the reason we quit going to the moon.

“We dumped the Shuttle and it’s successor isn’t even approved???”
“Are we a third world country all of a sudden?”

Yes. People voted for this. America is broke. Not going broke but broke. Americans vote for this everyday when they turn on their TV because ALL TV loves Obama.

Google the plans for the Saturn V. The detailed drawings were destroyed.

But we must have at least 800 billion in wealth transfer for welfare programs and “public education”.

How well we spend the confiscated money of our citizens.

Are we a third world country all of a sudden?

I keep telling folks, "It's later than you think."

Once the Chinese put a flag on the moon—and especially once they start zoning it—we'll dump the chumps and the race will be on. But that's way too late to play catch up.

Just break out the blueprints for the Saturn 1B or V. Problem solved.

Just as soon as the FBI returns them... confiscated and likely burned and destroyed along wtih all tools and dies after Apollo shut down.

And even if they had them right now, all the computer programmers and engineers are either dead or in old folks homes. Has been said that trying to reastart the old Apollo program would cost more than building a new system from scratch.

“SpaceX will pick up the slack”.

While I am a huge fan of SpaceX, and Burt Rattan, and all those guys, and fully believe they are 100% capable of extrordinary things (I watched space ship 1 launch), whatch for the government (especially this administration) to regulate these guys to death.

If Elon was smart he’d sell his share of the Tesla car company and focus completely on getting America back into space.

As the government regulates those small start up companies to death the big boys can come in like these.
