Educating Our Children: The Evolution of Home Schooling

Anne Gebhardt’s kids are learning about geography -- in her dining room in Bedford, Texas. It’s not your typical schoolhouse, but it’s one that Gebhardt says is serving her six children well. "We can teach our religious values to our children freely,” says Gebhardt. “We can teach anything that we want."

Gebhardt is part of a growing trend. Across the county, an estimated 1.5 million children are home schooled and that number's growing. In the span of eight years, home schooling has grown nationally by almost 75 percent.

The reasons parents choose to home school vary. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 36 percent of home schooled children stay at home for religious reasons.

Twenty one percent don't like the environment in traditional schools. Another 17 percent are home schooled because their parents are dissatisfied with the academic instruction that’s available to them in traditional schools.

"We've become more experimental about the way we offer education to children,” says David Chard, Dean of the School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University. "Many parents are able to provide strong educational opportunity for kids," he added.

Home schooling is a lot more effective than public schools which just goes to show how much of a disaster the public school system is in this country.

The public school system has become a laughingstock in our country and is responsible for the poor showing of ratings of our country as far as education is concerned.

Get rid of tenure, teacher unions and you will see an immediate uptick in grades and enrollments.

David Chard, Dean of the School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University, need not worry about my child’s social or coping skills. She is doing fine & better then if she were in school. She isn’t bullied, doesn’t have peer pressure & has plenty of friends. Best of all she isn’t getting sick all the time.

Give teachers the power to maintain order and discipline in the classroom, and you'll see another immediate improvement in achievement.

The fact that home schooling is better than public schools is an amazing testimonial when you think about it.

Can you imagine if folks working at home built a better automobile than Ford or performed more effective surgery than the doctors in a local hospital or grew their own food supply better than farmers?

Do you believe so?
I think not.

The communists have made a concerted effort to overtake the school system and the education colleges that train teachers.

I don’t think tenure and unions are the problem.

Many parents don't want to teach their children Socialism, Progressivism, Communism, Statism, Evolution, Political Correctness, Global Warming, Socialism, Progressivism, Communism, Statism, Shame of Patriotism, or anything else that the Feds want our kids to be brainwashed with.

Kids are learning a lot of foolishness, and less actual useful, helpful knowledge than ever before.

I hope most parents decide on home schooling.

Watch this and you’ll want to homeschool, or at least figure out an alternative to public school:

My siblings and I homeschooled our children, now they are homeschooling their children. At a recent family gathering, with everyone in attendance, I looked at the photo and realized we were looking at 18 homeschooled kids (1st and 2nd generation.) Oldest one was 34, youngest one was 5.

What were the results, of our homeschooling:

The older first generation (22-34 years of age):
1 Pilot for a major airline
1 Structural Engineer (has P.E.)
1 Industrial Engineer
1 Business Process Analyst MIS grad w/masters
1 Real Estate professional in commercial and residential property
1 mom who homeschools her children and works part time (from home)
All of these are employed and have never been w/out a job...many graduated at a young age because we used dual credit programs at CC during HS years.

In addition:

1 in college w/full ROTC scholarship
2 18 and under working on their AA’s
1 20 year old w/AA and going for BA

The other 8 are under 12 and are 2nd generation being homeschool by their parents.

All are extremely conservative in their politics. None were swayed by college philosophy (however, I do find that business schools/degrees and engineering schools/degrees don’t contain a lot of liberal slant. The beauty of AA general ed at CC is that you do tend to get more conservative profs. Many History/Political profs they had in CC were ex military) Also taking general ed classes while they’re still living at home (i.e. dual credit) allowed us, as parents to discuss with them what they were learning and counter any “garbage”)

I was amazed because I had never thought of the impact that 2nd generation homeschooling is going to have on this country. Homeschooling will expand exponentially.

Not really IMHO, as basically everyone homeschooling their children went through K-12 schooling themselves. After all, the only thing that should be challening AT ALL for adults is the last 3 years of high school. Given that the private sector (there we go again) is producing nice cirriculums which include the material needed to teach, this is a far cry from asking people to understand all the engineering needed to develop all the various systems and components of an automobile.

It is ONLY government itself, school employees and teachers unions who have a vested interest in vehemently maintaining that only a professional teach can teach grades K-12.

I’d say swimmingly. I’m basing that on my perception of their general knowledge, reading ability and such. Sarah (age 10 1/2) a little while back asked the eternal question “Grampa, what were electronics like when you were 9?” Their Mom (the home schooler) and Dad both did AP calculus in HS. Lisa scored a 5 and Michael a 3. I think they will be fine in math and science instruction.

In late 2009 mrs jimfree visited them in Florida to do a program for their home school group (they have since moved closer to us in Manassas VA). The mrs presented a .ppt on early 19th C. social, cultural, costume, and architectural history. I did a short program of period dances. We will continue to support their education that way as we are able.

I’m pushing that video on every thread that I can.
I watched it a couple of weeks ago, and it is a

MUST SEE

for all “Americanists” (formerly known as conservatives).

I bought a couple of copies after the showing and am passing them around to anyone who is interested.

Thank you for surpporting your grandchildren’s home schooling. There are many hs’ers out there who don’t have that kind of support from family. It’s invaluable.
